Netbeui vs TCP/IP

Post by Tuz76 »

Hi Guys,

Using 2 machines, one 2K the other 98SE, I was only able to get them to SEE each other in network neighbourhood if I used Netbeui.

Under TCP/IP, I coudnt get them seeing each other, even if I did find computer (they were fine when pinged).

Now my question is IF i decide to upgrade the 98SE machine to 2K, can i revert to using TCP/IP to Lan the computers and share my cable?

I really dont like netbeui because a) I dont understand how it works and b) I am worried about security. At present under netbeui I cant seem to get it working without my CABLE NIC having file and print sharing and client for microsoft networks installed. This means vulnerability....

Plz Advise

Cheers

Adding NetBEUI to your list of protocols is harmless security-wise. NetBEUI is not routable, and because of that, it does not route past your cable modem. The only time security is compromised is if you enable NetBIOS on the NIC attached to your cable modem. If your ISP does not block outgoing TCP/UDP connections on port 138, and you have NetBIOS enabled, anyone can easily eavesdrop on your network. NetBEUI will in fact help improve performance on your network since it requires less overhead compared to TCP/IP.

NetBEUI is more secure than TCP/IP because it is a protocol that is not routable over the internet, in otherwords there is no IP addressing scheme associated with it. If you have shares on your LAN I would highly recommend using NetBEUI and NOT TCP/IP.

You will still use TCP/IP to share your connection but at the file share level it will be NetBEUI. It is important under Windows 2000 though to go to the advanced options of the Network Connetions window and bind file/print sharing to NetBEUI...the default is TCP/IP.

Ok I have 2 NICS in my server machine 2k.

To share my cable modem and have a secure network what do i need to do?

Or is there a reference site plz?

Im a little stuck. And should I share using Sygate or just the default Sharing in 2k?

Cheers

As I mentioned previously, NetBEUI will NOT pose a security risk. NetBEUI is not routable so no one will see your setup past your cable modem. If you already have two NIC's on your server, I'd recommend NAT software like WinRoute. I heard W2K's ICS sucks, though I think it works better than previous versions than WinME's watered down version.

You can also use WinGate or Sygate.

I prefer Proxy+, http://www.proxyplus.cz

For up to 3 users, it is free. We have been using the paid version (more users) for years now.
