Thanks for the replies, fellas, however, I think I need to research my problem more.

What I perceived to be the problem, the mapped connection being disconnected, is probably not the reason. Someone mentioned that Windows XP drops the connection if the online drive is not accessed for more than 15 ...

Losing connection on a mapped drive

Thanks in advance for any help.

My problem is this:

We are running windows XP Pro.

we have setup a backup to run on a network drive, but it never runs because the drive seems to be disconnected automatically.

I have run across an article in mircrosoft support, ID 297684 entitled

Hi

Have you got Google Toolbar installed. This has created problems for
some people. If you have, uninstall it and see if this helps.

I found the reason for the error and the solution to it.

It seems that the - Google Toolbar - causes the problem.

You just go to the Control Panel, then to Add/Remove programs, find the Google Tool Bar and remove it.

Presto, the problem disappears.

Thanks, Cerberus1027, for the help, but unfortunately, it did not work.

When I ran sfc.exe it did pick up 1 corrupted file, and replaced it from the windows98 disk. However, afterwards, when you try to log onto the Internet, the same error occurs.!

Darn.

So I am re-issuing my plea for help ...

No, just a home machine, runs all the time except when I reboot for updates etc. I have folding at home on it, so it runs continously.

Not a fresh install.

Window XP Home Annoying Problem

My problem is not earth shaking, but it is annoying and I do not know how it started.

What happens is, that when I boot up, and windows loads, I get a screen that shows 2 boxes. The box in the background is grayed out and reads:

I have used it for a few years and really find it useful.

If you have a spreasheet and want to cut out a part of it and send to somebody. Swish, and it is done , well not quite that fast but it does work fast.

Thanks to you all.

I resolved the problem. Simple solution was to download Zone Alarm Pro.

Once Zone Alarm Pro was installed and the initial questions answered, all went well.

That VSMON.EXE was the killer though. I searched on Google and found other people had real problems with it.

I think I have found the problem, but have no clue as to the solution to my woes.

Following Cyberskye's advice I opened Windows Task Manager and in watching the activity I noticed that when Outlook Express tried to use the internet - VSMON.EXE show it was using 95%

That is when everything slowed ...

I doubled my memory from 256 to 512 - cyberskye.

I got Outlook Express to run and made sure the top 3 boxes were unchecked - Richardc

But, no go. As soon as it loads Outlook Express, and starts looking for mail, everything slows down and I mean down down down.

My friend was able to recover all his information by using Get Data back from Runtime.

Did not cost a cent as he was able to open each D drive file individually and then save it with either photoshop or word depending of course on the format on his ...

Thanks a lot fellows, we really appreciate the help.

So far he has tried using PC Inspector and Drive Rescue which both programs gave him the message:

"Bad Parameter in boot sector. Bytes per sector (0)= 0"

Whatever that means..!!!

He also tried GETDATABACK from Runtime and they were successful ...

Had some upgrade done on a system, it originally had a 16 gig
drive, with XP on it. Worked fine.

When upgrading motherboard - XP would not allow access to harddrive, we added second drive 40 gig, then had to reinstall XP on 40 gig.

Computer starts on its own

Just recently I had another friends computer upgraded with the following:

17" Case w/300 W
Gigabyte 8SR533
P4 1.6 478 Pin 512K Cache
DDR Ram: 256MB PC333

So far the only problem is that starts up on its own

He has it shut off, comes home, and finds it is running.
