Yup if you want to do live streaming video then you'll need a VPN. If you want to just download and swap files then go with Serv U and whatever FTP client you want to use.

I agree I would go with a wired print server. If you are planning on using wireless through your house as well I would just connect all of your components as one. Mine is setup as follows:
-Linksys router which is uplinked to cable modem.(I use static IP's for all my comps connected to my network ...

You don't have to have a computer connected to you wireless router all the time for it to work. I have a netgear wireless router and never have anything hard wired to the router unless something goes wrong or I need to change it's config. Then I just take my laptop and plug it into the router to ...

I would also down Speedfan which can be found here... http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php and check to see what yout cpu and ambient temps are. This could also be a problem due to high temps.

As long as your DVD-Rom isn't old as dirt it should have no problem reading DL discs. If you're having trouble reading them I would go to the manufacturer's website and see if there's a firmware update/upgrade to fix the issue.

Depending on how your school network is setup ie. Cisco hardware, I've had whole networks go down to someone adding incompatable components to the network ie. a Netgear switch! Now that's pretty annoyning.

I agree with the firmware upgrade. Usually with someone's home network that's the first place I look with disconnection and other issues. Check that first and it's there's an upgrade do it and see if that doesn't fix your disconnection issue.

Unfortunately you can't assign a specific nic card to certain applications. At least not with Windows XP, 2000, etc. You would need some version of MS Server which I'm assuming really wouldn't be beneficial to you. So the short and skinny of it is no. :(
