The recent FCC ruling might have a serious impact on ISPs (especially area providers, nationwides like Earthlink are in better shape) providing DSL service. At best, their cost will go up and they will pass this on. At worst, we could all be stuck using the phone company as our ISP. I know of no one ...

I don't have one but the Nvidia 6600GT is getting rave reviews in the video newsgroups. Most say it is the sweet spot. Goes for between $150 and $225 or so.

I figured that was probably the case. I guess I'll live with this system as is for a while. Thanks

Well, I took Sygate off and tried Kerio. It gave a bunch of problems right off the bat. Off it came when it froze up Pegasus, my email client. I have Outpost on now and it seems to be working fine. I'll give it a try for a few days. The other computer networks up without any problems and printing ...

Sygate's Firewall kills my network

This is somewhat confusing to describe. I have a 2 computer network (//Big & //Little) using netbeui (netbios is not used), a D-Link DL-704P router (with Print Server), and Win98 1st. It works perfectly if Sygate's Personal FW (free) is not running. The FW is installed on //Big only. //Little has no ...

I took a look at my D-Link DI-704P and it has, and I quote, "Deny users to access all domains except "Permitted Domains"" and a list box for permitted domains. Don't know if this will server your purpose.

Check for malware. You could have a trojan or spyware. SpyBot Search & Destroy and Adaware should be run. Installing a firewall can keep any unallowed apps from accessing the internet. Are any apps set to "keep alive" a connection? That isn't needed with DSL since it is alive at all times.

Pings to my ISP's name server went from 18ms to 19ms with ZA. Not a lot of change. Connecting can take a bit longer with ZA.

Try calling while the DSL is down. Intermittent problems can be hard to sort out. I think it is on their end.

You might try a release and renew using winipcfp (Start > Run> type> winipcgf [enter]). Another thing you might try is unpluging the modem for 30 seconds then plug it in again. Sometimes ...

loop2kil, you hit my dilemma squarely on the head. Since my job was outsourced to China, I can't build a new system at this time but would like to increase performance and play some of the newer games. I have the latest bios (v 1.5) installed. You answered one of my questions, though, about if the ...

Thanks, Chris, for the response. I was think of a new card in addition or instead of the CPU change. The 9800 Pro has been suggested to me before along with the GForce 4 Ti (an older card) and the 6600 GT. Looks like Newegg has the 9800 Pro and the 6600 GT for about the same price (GT slightly more ...

Hello,

I usually leave my pc on for long hours and sometimes I even dont switch it off (for download purposes).

A friend of mine told me to change my 'Power options properties' to reduce consumption. So, I setted it to 'Turn Off Harddisk after 20 minutes'.

I have two 40 gig Maxtor HDDs ...

Computer Tips & Tricks

Hi all, first post on this board.

At least in W98, and maybe other MS OS's, you can force the system to use nearly all your physical memory before it uses the swap file. Probably best with 256meg or more. But try it with less, it might be OK. Easy enough to undo.

In System.INI under [386Enh] add ...
