no way... i have heard that before though, is it really true?

Even if it is... I can SEE a huge difference between 100fps and 150 fps... 32 is really jumpy. and I know that avid gamers usually dislike the fps dropping below 60fps.

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention...

Since you did say that your computer couldn't handle quake3, I assume it's not a monster. Do some timedemos in quake2 to see what framerates you get.

Incase you don't know, here is how you do a timedemo:
Go to the console & type:
set timedemo 1
map demo1.dm2 (or you ...

Actually in Quake2 rate is NOT the most important setting for lag. Try changing the "cl_maxfps" around a little. That will have the biggest affect. Depending on your connection, ping, bandwidth, it will probably very from SERVER to SERVER!
Personally I usually use 60 (rate 8000), but on some servers ...

Yes, upload is the most important factor in hosting a game server. I'm not exactly sure what specific speeds you need to reach, it really depends on the game. But I know that w/ my 128K upload cap (16KB/sec) I can only host a MAXIMUM of 2 other people before it lags out in Quake3Arena. Quake2 I ...

The consol will be up when the server is running.

Make sure you don't close the consol cuz that is the server.

It's most likely a heat issue...

Do you have your CPU or Video card overclocked? If so then you might want to clock them back down a little.

um... well i'm not sure on your first question but on your second one:

Do you mean it actually freezes at the consol? Can you type in commands on the text line? I think you're just confused on what a dedicated server is.

When you set up a dedicated server it runs a consol which IS the server, it ...

It depends a lot on what you use your computer for. If you like to play CPU intensive games like Quake3 then yes a PIII will be extremely faster. Especially compared to a celeron. B/c of the P3s 256k full speed, on-die L2 cache, it would take a Celeron clocked at 750 to equal a P3-600e in Quake3 ...

I just bought a PIII-600E and was planning on overclocking the hell outta the thing but then I realize that I'm still running PC100 memory :-(

Does anyone have any recommended PC133 RAM that will definatly go to 150mhz+?

well you can see in-game rates by turning on the cg_drawfps in the corner by typing this in the consol: \cg_drawfps 1

or you can run a timedemo like this:
\timedemo 1
\demo demo001.dm3
and then when it's done look at the consol and it should say something like demo001 completed in xxxx seconds w ...

I have the Intellimouse Explorer (optical) and I have to admit that when I first got it I wanted to throw it against a wall.. but now I realize how much better it is than a ball b/c of the fact that it IS more precise... even on an everglide or radpad it's still got a little bit of an edge...

Not sure what game you are playing but in Quake2 when I needed to do this I would crank my MaxFPS up and it would start adding some ms to my ping.. depending on the game this may or may not help you
