Optimal Rate settings for Q2

Post by MadMaN »

hey, i play Q2 avidly, as my comp cant handle UT or Q3. So while i play online with my cable, with decent pings, i am curious about optimal rate settings. I have run with 9000 in the past. but now i run mostly at 5500.

Personally I see no difference in performance.

Any questions ? comments ? helpful tips?

Theres some line up them, I forgot what it is exactly, I think 2000 for 14.4 2500 for 36.6 3000 for 56k and anything above that for canything higher. Just play with which ever one looks best and doesnt give you lag/packet loss. Try setting the rate to 10, youll notice a difference then :p

Actually in Quake2 rate is NOT the most important setting for lag. Try changing the "cl_maxfps" around a little. That will have the biggest affect. Depending on your connection, ping, bandwidth, it will probably very from SERVER to SERVER!
Personally I usually use 60 (rate 8000), but on some servers really close to me that I ping better to (below 50) I could use cl_maxfps 100 & rate 25000 w/ no problem.

Oh yeah, i forgot to mention...

Since you did say that your computer couldn't handle quake3, I assume it's not a monster. Do some timedemos in quake2 to see what framerates you get.

Incase you don't know, here is how you do a timedemo:
Go to the console & type:
set timedemo 1
map demo1.dm2 (or you can do demo2.dm2)

or download the crusher demo.. that's a good test.

It will then run through the demo1 as fast as it can, when it's done it will tell you the rate xxx fps... make sure your "cl_maxfps" isn't higher then what your computer can do.

Lets say you're getting 50 frames per second (fps) and you have your maxfps set at 60. Well now the server is sending you 10 frames more then your computer can even display! What a waste of bandwidth!

Just play around w/ it.. personally I think 30fps is WAY TOO low but that's just me. You probably won't lag as much w/ 30fps but it wouldn't be very pretty :-P

but if your computer can only display that much then it's a good setting.

even though the human eye sees 32fps :p

no way... i have heard that before though, is it really true?

Even if it is... I can SEE a huge difference between 100fps and 150 fps... 32 is really jumpy. and I know that avid gamers usually dislike the fps dropping below 60fps.

rate can lower ping and at stabability, i would use rate 8000 for cable modems and a cl_maxfps of 30 and under for p200 or lower and for mid range like 50 and high end just leave it default

For Q2, most servers limit the rate anyway or usually the good ones do. :p A higher rate means less jerking and 'strobing' and gaps between player movements when theres lots stuff happening onscreen so higher the rate the better but it's hard to notice a diff with anything above 10000 probably unless your playing 32 player games of CTF. :)
