Settings/Tweaks for vista to help improve /pings/gaming?

Post by Aus3G »

Hi, Ive just installed my USB modem on windows vista, and my latency seems to be much higher than on XP. Ive done alot of reading in these forums and others and cant seem to find much help in tweaking/setting my connection for online gaming/better latency in vista.

Ive carried out all the fixes/tweaks on the Vista 2008 page with little or no difference, Ive tried using tcp/ip optimzier but it seems theres not much i can do with it, as i understand that Vista doesnt let you alter there TCP stack.

Can anyone make any suggestions to settings? Provide any tweaks? or tell me anything to try and get my net to what it was under XP?

Im mainly interested in improving my latency for online games.

My connection is 3G HSDPA wireless, ZTE MF636 USB modem and i live in QLD
Australia. (also i cant seem to access the default gateway in that modem, if anyone knows how?)

download this MS patch :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940646

Turn on the default RWIN auto tuning behavior:
open command prompt type:
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal
POST NEW TCP/IP Analyzer

Hi thx heaps for reply.

I downloaded that patch... it says "update does not apply to this system" it's also dated 2007, so i should already have it?

I've re-enabled auto tuning as i only had if off because it gives me more stable connections.

CMD:

TCP Global Parameters

Receive-Side Scaling State=enabled
Chimney Offload State=enabled
Receive Window AutoTuning Level=Normal
Add-on Congestion Control Provider=ctcp
ECN Capability=disabled
RFC 1323 Timestamps=diabled

MTU=1500

Also i use software supplied to me by my ISP for my connection, meaning i can disable WLAN and my connection will still work. Could this have an affect? Id like to try and use my modem without the ISP supplied software but am not sure if its even possible?

NOTE:Sometimes when i do this check with auto-tuning enabled the unscaled RWIN factor will go as high as the default setting (17680) but never higher.
MTU will also change from 40,1000 and 1400.

MTU: 1000
MTu is rather low !

Try the following with TCP Optimizer and see if MTU will change:

General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1500
TTL - 64
Windows Scaling - uncheck
TCP Receive Window - leave blank
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Timestamps - uncheck

Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 10
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 80
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Firefox Extreme Speed Edition

Ive put those settings in... wether they chnaged or not i dont know.... I cant change my MTU in tcp optimizer as it doesnt list my NIC. But i have set my MTU to 1500 for the NIC i use in CMD, even though my MTU is set to 1500 in the CMD it is constantly changing from 1400, 1000 and 40. I think my ISP may have capped my mtu at 1400 but how do i stop it from going down to 1000?

The problem overall i am having is no matter what i do (even with auto-Tuning on) i cant get my RWIN above the windows VISTA default of 17680.
