When you first configure winXP for the first time, it asks you if you need to install a 3rd party raid/scsi device. The only way I know of to safely/stably(stable-ly?) to install this 3rd party controller is though this method during winxp setup. Basically it has been my experience that if you want to setup a new raid/controller that you have to start with a fresh install of windows.
**EDIT** A good method for testing this is to use an old or secondary HD as a "test" drive with the controller and a fresh install, then wipe all your soon to be raid drives out since they need to be formatted anyway and setup your driver on the ACTUAL hard drive to be used assuming you were able to navigate the 3rd party setup steps successfully on test drive.

Im sure you have already but have you gone to the Manufacturers website and downloaded their newest drivers and/or Firmware first before using the older drivers?

You setup a raid array with an existing OS installation? wow, thats impressive. I honestly didn't know it was possible. I mean I know you can add an ata controller to an existing install but I've never seen a raid controller like what he is installing done like that.
Burke wrote:Nightowl, are you trying to add a RAID separate from Windows, or are you trying to install Windows onto a RAID-0?
I don't think it matters if he is configuring the raid or not, I think windows has a beef with post OS install raid controller install, something about how it has to be setup during the initial installation, its been a while since I did one.
there is no raid setup yet (only one drive)....i managed to get it to work however for some strange reason it keeps asking to reisntall the raid controller.
Sooo...I ending up just reloading the OS to clear up all the problems
and OMFG this harddrive is quick got one of those WG 36 gig 10krpm SATA 150 drives...access time is 5.5 milliseconds

Yep,
One of the ones I've done that was the most fun was adding a Promise raid5 controller to a server that had a mirrored set (which was on a promise controller too). They ran out of room on the mirrored set, so I added the raid5 and moved the data to it. Then I had to change the drive letter to "D" so that all the shortcuts on the domain would still be good. The OS stayed on the "C" partition.
Not a big deal, it can be done if planned properly.
