Actually, several thousand planes launched today, and as many did indeed land.

More launches are scheduled for tomorrow and the following days as well.

They occurred worldwide.

The SIRTF observatory was launched yesterday. What you might have seen is the DART spacecraft being prepared. It is a technology demonstrator for the Orbital Space Plane concept. It's mission is to demonstrate autonomous rendezvous and docking procedures/technologies.

i think what he means is....

there is a race underway (with a $10,000,000 prize) for the first privately owned space vehicle that can take off under it's own power, reach orbit, return to earth and be ready to do it again within 2 days or 2 weeks or some very short timeframe (brain fart.. can;t remember all the details about it).

most of the entrants are using an airplane as the chassis, but fitted with the necessary equipment to make it a viable spacecraft as well.

Burt and Robert Ruttan (sp?) are two separate competitors i believe. they are brothers, BTW.

try doing some googlin' on "ruttan space prize". i can;t remember then exact name of the "prize".

I haven't heard of many planes being "launched"...usually referred to as "take off". But on aircraft carriers, I guess "launch" can be used since they're under assist of the catapult. And that being the case, yes many will occur today, and tomorrow, and the day after...not that much of an exciting novelty anymore since the 1930's.

I think he did long ago. The only things I can find on him now are his Varieze (SP) projects. Yeap, that's the man. One cool dude.

Upon reflection, I may be thinking of Riley rather then Rutan, but I wonder if the Rutan's on the x prize are in any way related?

Rutan's company's, (Scaled Composites), X-Prize contender is called "Space Ship One". It is a two part system, a mother ship called "White Knight" carries the space craft up to, I forget how high, releases it and a hybrid rocket on the spacecraft fires to a sub-orbital hop. The spacecraft was test dropped recently for the first time.
