Celebrities think that by virtue of their famousness, they know more than us "lesser" people with regards to how the government should be run...I never listen to them...

That Sheen fella really steams my clams. Just cuz he plays the Pres on TV, he thinks he is, what a nimrod.

You can say the same about politicans....and yet...

The thing is, the constitution isn't explicit when it comes to who can say what and when...It just says mentions a little thing called freedom of speech.

To take it away is so ummm.....far right or far left..I'll put up with the idiots, as well as the better than thou's, thank you. No matter the flavor...McCarthy to Willis...makes no diff.

Is it not amazing, though how we put any weight into the carriage of the famous? We emulate their clothing, music. life styles and even politics. Sheep to a publicity machine, not unlike the one thar sold us on a war.

Liars and hypocrites, but any moreso than our those in elected offices?

Most have email address's. As do most of your congressmen.

Anyone ever email your Senator? At least these clebs are sticking to what they believe in, even if no one agrees....Can't say that about 90 percent of your Congress...

OK...first off....there is no WE here. What I do may be very different from what you. Yes.....I hold everyone to their word.

These celebs don't know what to believe in.....that is why they failed to carry through with their promise to leave the country. They are not strongly committed to their beliefs...and before you even say a single word DH....their actions speak louder than their words.

The difference between politicians and celebrities is that we elect politicians based on our beliefs. We choose to watch celebrities because of the characters they play. When was the last time you went to a movie because an actor had a certain political impetus?

And yes, I have emailed my Senator (both, actually - one democrat, one republican) on numerous occasions about numerous issues...

One thing is certain. Both actors and politicians share a large number of traits. The ability to BS someone. The talent to make what they are saying sound completely 180 degrees out from what it actually means, and so on...

Didn't mean to exactly step on your toes, UOD....but I still disagee....

I know of no one who hasn't broken a promise or changed their mind once in a while...and I could be wrong but wasn't it only one celeb that promised to go?

Shurg...he's still here and I don't see his movies...

If (being careful to not say we, least I bring down the wrath of Khan on a figure of speech.) one doesn't like that particular celeb...then don't support them by watching their movies, buying their Cd's, yada yada yada......it's more, ummm.....satisfing than reading rants about them.

At least for me..(not a figure of speech)

As to the whole thing.....if a person agrees with the constitution, then a person would have to agree that a persons freedom of speech applies to everyone and not just one view point.......

What is it that drives the celebs to get thier noses in politics anyways? Seems a great way to alienate a large segment of a potential audience. Take B. Streisand for instance. She prolly gets little income from hard core right wingers, and Tom Selleck, I know the libs just foam at the mouth when his name is mentioned.

Seems like a stupid career move to align yerslef as an entertainer with a "side" ya know?

Whats to gain? Is it just a big ego stroking thing or what?

Ever wonder what happened to all those celebrities who promised to leave the country if George W. Bush was elected president?

The original statements:

Eddie Vedder - "I'm moving to a different country if little Damien II gets elected."

Alec Baldwin - was never quoted directly, but reportedly made a statement to his wife Kim Basinger, who was later quoted in Focus magazine saying that Alec "might leave the country if Bush is elected president ... and then I'd probably have to go too."

Barbara Streisand - "I don't think you'll see me around here for at least four years."

Robert Altman - "If George Bush is elected president, I'm leaving for France."

Pierre Salinger - "If Bush wins, I'm going to leave the country and spend the rest of my life in France."

The outcome:

Eddie Vedder was "extremely disappointed", but not enough to leave the US. He did go to Hawaii, however.

Alec Baldwin claims that he never made the statement, but even if he did it wouldn't matter since Bush wasn't really elected, he was "selected by five judges up in Washington who voted along party lines". (He originally claimed his wife never spoke with Focus magazine, a claim which he later recanted.)

Barbara Streisand, who was at a White House dinner when she made the statement, claims that when she said she would not be seen "around here" that she was only referring to not being seen around the White House.

Robert Altman, despite being caught on film, later insisted that he was misquoted, saying "Here's what I really said. I said that if Bush gets elected, I'll move to Paris, Texas, because the state will be better off if he's out of it."

Pierre Salinger moved to France.

I had missed the Vedder and Altman commentary. What were the sources? Were they given in interview or as an aside? They smatter of idle threat rather than a promise. Their histrionics do not surprise me, however.
I cannot say how much time and money they have donated, I am certain Streisand and Altman have done so. Is it any different than corporates quietly funneling money into the coffers of the Democrats and Republicans?
