Win2k restarts by itself

Post by Tuz76 »

Hi,

just upgraded to 2k. everythings fine. yet every now and then, the PC reboots itself for no apparent reason. Sometimes im just starting an app and BANG it reboots all of a sudden.

Anyone know what might be doing that??

win98SE didnt do it.

You could have a driver that is causing it. Have you looked at the event log to see if there is an error generated? I don't recall if Win2k has the same feature, but in WindowsXP there is an option that will reboot the machine if it encounters a system error.

Look under System Properties by right clicking My Computer and look under the Advanced Tab I think it is under Win2k.

Have you installed service pack 2 yet? When you say upgraded did you upgrade over 98 or did you format your dive and start with Win2k fresh?

right click on MY COMPUTER.....then select ADVANCED ....then START UP RECOVERY

you should see a check box for AUTOMATICALLY REBOOT

uncheck this box.

what will most likely happen is a BSOD will appear and show a stop error.

write down the error number then go to microsoft.com and get in the knowledgebase and enter the error number in the search area and hopefully there will be an artice thatll pop up tellin ya what the heck is goin on

alternatively....if you uncheck the AUTOMATICALLY REBOOT box and your system still totally reboots on its own ........you may have a bad PSU
or possibly something else in your system causing the power to cut out.

perhaps overheating as Cabledude stated

hope it helps

the latter of the 2 happened to me about a month ago.

OK Thanks for all your replies guys...your awesome!

heres the situation.

I have a motherboard only cable of pc100-ram. Now in there I had 256 RAM. One sim is 128MB PC133

The other 2 sims are 2 64MB sims. One is PC133, the other is PC100.

So i thought it could be the memory, particularly the older 64 PC100 memory?

Well at the moment, ive taken it our, running now on 128mb pc133 sim and a 64pc133 sim. Seems stable. Time will tell though My uptime is only half an hour as i write this!

Do u guys think this could be causing the problem?

Well it depends on the motherboard I guess and the RAM. I'm running a Win2K server with a stick of 256mb PC133 and a stick 64mb PC100 and it runs fine. I never suggesting mix matching because it does cause problems simular to yours and other issues.

Have you installed Servcie pack 2 yet? if you havnt you should... even if your problem ends up being the RAM.

You may HATE the blue screen......and a manual restart may take and extra MINUTE out of your BUSY day, but youll have another piece of the puzzle to troubleshoot your issue.

If your scared to uncheck it then dont..........but i do it when i need to because it helps to get the problem solved.

my 2 cents take it or leave it.
