Tweaking my P00r Cable

Post by Crusader »

Can Any1 advise help me on what are the best settings. I know u must get a ton of these questions thrown at you all the time, but spare a thought for those less fortunate than you (like me) on the lower end of broadband (UK :mad: ) with packages such as 512k/128k, currently the fastest available residential cable package :( :mad:

Anywayz this is what I got my registry set up as:

Default RcvWindow: 259072
Default Mss: 1472
Default TTL: 256
Black Hole: 0
Discovery: 1
SackOpts: 1
TCP1323Opts: 3

I remember being told ages ago, that due to my limited bandwidth (600k down - 72kb/s max, and 128k up - 16kb/s max) that my rcv window was too high and that i could use a low rcv window and no multiplier :confused: :confused:

Thx in advance for any help :eek: :D

TCP1323Opts=0 and try a smaller RWIN for your connection. I don't know what your MTU is set at so I don't know which RWIN's would work for you. BTW, that is a false MSS... 1472?? Oh and set MaxDupAcks to 3. Take the TCP/IP Analyzer test from my sig and post your results so that I can see what your current settings are :)
<sarcastic>um... yeah</sarcastic>

MTU = 1500

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10362.88 kbps (1295.36 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4145.152 kbps (518.144 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

Will go to Lobo's page :)

NEED HELP FAST!!!!!

Post by mista3style »

im gettin a REALLY poor rate of bout 20-30 K a sec and want to pusah it up so it really fast! heres ma spexTCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 64240
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2569.6 kbps (321.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1027.84 kbps (128.48 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 116 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Try these RWIN's (Default Rvc Window)
1 at a tine in box on adjuster inside 4.2 on desktop. GlobalmaxTcpWindowSize-BLANK
Save to registry at bottom and reboot each time you change value in adjuster
Check analyzer here at Speedguide to be sure you have RWIN in, thank you
Try: 513920, 522680 or 524176 :) :) :)

Grr, this is my thread, not urs, plz make ur own :(

=============================================
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)

TCP options string = 020405b4010303020101080a000000000000000001010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1448, which is less than MSS because of Timestamps, or other TCP/IP options used.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 259072
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64768
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10362.88 kbps (1295.36 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4145.152 kbps (518.144 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 244 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
=====================================

O/S = win98se (win2k soon)

Sysytem- 1.33Ghz AMD @ 1.5Ghz, 512Mb ram, anythink else relevant? 3com 900B network card, and surfboard 3100 modem

Btw, Im not thick, theres no need to make a guide for dummies on c&p'ing the results from an analyser :)

See your test above, MSS 1460, Windows automattically sets it 40 below MTU, just put in RWIN please :)

Tho this has gone up :)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 22192 kbps (2774 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 8876.8 kbps (1109.6 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

Would it go up even higher with the highest value of rcwindow u mentioned? :2cool:

Sorry, with the pageage you have I don't think you are going to be able to get great speed, try 63888 as a RWIN :)

I thought the value was meant to be 64240 (44 x 1460) ?

Oh well, Ill try both :)

Btw, I saw somewhere that said that if u dont use timestamps, then u can fir more data onto each packet? If this possible for me to do??
