File compression question
File compression question
Hey folks, I just zipped a 732 MB file on the highest compression WinZip has (and the slowest), and only got it down to 726 MB.
Any way to super-compress a file? Does WinRar compress any more then WinZip?
Thanks

Re: File compression question
winrar claims to compress files down 20% more than winzip can from the original file size, so I would take the original file and rar it, I have gotten files ~45megs to under 35megs with winrarOriginally posted by Humboldt

edit: i would think you could get it into the 600's (megs that is) with winrar, maybe not but try it out, and it goes fairly fast too
OK, I'll give it a try. What, http://www.winrar.com or something? I can look of course, but do you have a link?

Taking out 0's? To my understanding Compressing looks at the file and finds series of binary that is identicle Gives that serries a code....then just uses the code instead of the entire LINE...is that correct?! or am i just an idiot?!Originally posted by Humboldt
Avi. Are some more compressable than others? It's all just taking out 0's right?

some files are more compressable then others, and some are less compressable
an avi will not compress much because it's already compressed in it's codec, you know how big that AVI file would be if it were a raw avi file not compressed, GIGS worth in size no telling, it'd be large though and take up tons of space, for example a 30 second clip i recorded once took up 50MB uncompressed
image files compress well on the other hand
