My neighbors connection is faster, but I pay for faster service (Same ISP)

Post by alltracturbo »

My internet has been acting up lately and I thought it was due to watching movies online and going over my ISP's usage limit, but it isn't a consistent slow. Sometimes it's extremely slow where I can't even get basic pages to load and other times it goes faster than what i'm paying for.

After visiting my ISP's website, it seems like they don't have a specific usage cap. All high speed users get a minimum of 5GB/month.
Frontier - www.frontier.com/5GB/ wrote:Does Frontier plan to limit my use of the Internet?
Frontier is providing (NOT LIMITING) all customers with a minimum of 5GB of usage on a monthly basis. The Company has made no decision at this time to charge for additional usage but wants to start to educate customers about their usage.

If I hit 5GB will my service be interrupted?
No. Your service will not be interrupted at 5Gb. You will continue to use our High Speed Internet service without disruption.
I hope there not capping at 5GB, bc I can use that in about 2 days.

Not sure what info you need. Currently:

Windows XP SP2, IE 7, dsl modem and wireless router. I think the DSL is 1.3 Mbit/sec, but I have seen it in tests up to 2 Mbit/sec. Speed is just as slow if connect directly to the modem with an ethernet cable.

Running TCP Optimizer set on 1500 kbps connection speed, MTU 1492, and optimal settings checked.

I think i'm going to call my ISP today and see if there limiting me, but is there anything else anyone can think of? Thanks.

Have them check your signals too.

What do you mean by "check your signals"? Are you talking about when they come to the house and connect something to the box on the side of my house where the phone cable comes in?

I talked to them today and they said there going to look into it at the central office and if they need to they'll send someone out to the house to look at it. I have a feeling there not going to be able to fix it though.

I don't understand why it goes up and down so much. I checked it a few hours after my first post and it was up to 1300kbps, where it should be, but it didn't stay there for long.

Also when my internet it going slow and I run the test at speedtest.net or the one on my ISP's website, it lags for a while after I click start. I timed the speedtest one and after I clicked start it did the ping right away, but then sat there for 32 seconds before it started the download test. This happens with websites also where it will just get stuck loading the page and i'll have to refresh to get the page to load. I posted here a long time ago with packet loss problems and never fixed it, that might still be a problem.

Signal strength, they can check over the phone and you can check at your modem page too, probably 192.168.100.1

Still not sure how to find the signal strength. This is all the info I could find on my modem. Is any of this what your looking for?

Rollingstone, I applied the settings that you provided, restarted computer, and ran another speed test. Here's what I got.

Image

For the network adapter: "network adapter selection - your NIC". Does it matter which one I chose here since I checked "modify all network adapters"? I can choose my wireless card or my ethernet adapter. I have been choosing wireless.

Also it is still pausing a lot durring the test like I have packet loss. And it pauses after the ping also.

Heres another.

This should help explain what i'm talking about better. Sorry for the crappy quality, I should have zoomed in closer on the numbers. You can make it bigger if you click "full size" on the bottom right of the video.

(Video removed b/c ISP fixed problem and I wanted to delete it from my photobucket account)

Watch how long it takes to start after the ping test and then how many times it pauses during the dowload test. The percentage completed will stop and the kbps will start to count down.

Like I said, it's not always like this. When it is running as fast as it should be, it will do the test smooth and there won't be a long pause after the ping test.

This is a 3 mbps line in the US. RWIN should be set to 63888.

Only the Windows firewall. Also running AVG Antivirus. Maybe the settings are messed up in the Windows firewall? I've never had any problems with accessing anything online.

I don't think i'm paying for 3 mbps. I think it is 1.3 mbps.

Edit: I just logged into my account on my ISP's website and looked at my current services. Under High Speed Internet it says "FrontierNet DSL Service 1MB/128KB". I remember getting a letter in the mail a while ago and it said it was 1.3MB.

Next time I talk to them, if i remember, i'll ask what speed i'm paying for.

Actually I just realized from reading someone elses post online that the router has a firewall. It is a Linksys Wireless G WRT54G. Here is what the current settings are and the explination of what they do if you need them.

(Pictures removed b/c they are not needed anymore and I wanted to delete them from my photobucket account)

I just unchecked all the boxes, saved the settings and tried to tracert yahoo again and got the same timed out results. Put setting back to how they were. I also tried it with Windows firewall turned off and got the same results.

Some more info.

When connected through the wireless router, the tracert doesn't work and I cannot ping anything except 127.0.0.1.

When I connect to modem through ethernet cable, tracert still times out, but I can ping yahoo.

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

Edit: I told TCP Optimizer to reset to windows default settings and I came up with this:

Tracing route to www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com [69.147.76.15]

Trace complete.

I can also ping through wireless now too:

Pinging www-real.wa1.b.yahoo.com [69.147.76.15] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 69.147.76.15: bytes=32 time=29ms TTL=54

Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:

TCP Optimizer set TTL to 128, but when I ping Yahoo it says the TTL is 54. When I ping 127.0.0.1 the TTL is 128.

In xp firewall goto control panel advanced firewall make sure the first two boxes under icmp is checked. On the linksys should be under wan settings make sure you allowing wan requests to get though. Uncheck those settings in the capture screen it's last secure ,but some providers seem to work beter without those filters on.

One more thing on the router if it does have a wan duplex setting trying changing it to 100full

When I wen't into the ICMP settings for Windows firewall they were all unchecked. I checked the first two. Tried tracert Yahoo again with same time out results.

Then I unchecked the the boxes in the wireless routers firewall settings so it doesn't block any WAN requests. Tried again and it still times out.

I noticed that I can change the MTU for the wireless router. Should that match the MTU that I have set in the TCP Optimizer. Optimizer is set to 1492, but the router says it is at the default setting of 1500.

By the way, I have no idea what i'm doing when setting up the router. I know a decent ammount about computers, but I never got into seting up the router. I don't even have it secured. I live in an area where theres only 2 house that might be able to get my signal and you would have a hard time connecting from the street. Plus i'm the last house on a dead end so theres not really anybody unless they live here. I will secure it someday when I feel like. Don't try and explain it here though, theres already enough going on here.

Also, my ISP called and left me a message that said "They are having bandwidth issues at the remote down the street from me. There working on the problem and hopefully it will be remedied shortly."

This is really not right.

My internet:
Image

My neighbors internet:
Image

I'm just going to start using there's evertime mine gets slow, which is about 90% of the time.

I'm posting this on their internet b/c I couldn't even get the page to load on mine. After that test show, I couldn't get it to do anymore. And the other part that sucks is that their wireless signal is just barely strong enough for me to connect to. Sometimes it has problems connecting.

Edit: And here's my internet now, an hour later:

I know this thread is old, but I just wanted to clear up a couple things.

First, I was having problems b/c of something on there end. They said it was an engineering problem and there is a lot of people in my area having problems. It still gets very slow at times, but it works a lot more often now then it use to. I have talked to my ISP and they are crediting me for the past and will continue till they fix the problem.

About the speed issue with me having a 3 megabit connection and I thought I had 1 megabit. I am paying for 1 megabit, but they have been providing me with 3 megabit at no additional cost. I realized this when they recently dropped me down to 1 megabit. I noticed b/c my upload speeds were always around 375 kbps no matter how slow the download speeds were. Now my upload is only at 160 and when my internet is working perfect, the download will be around 1100 kbps.

I also wanted to ask about using DSL and the distance from my ISP. I don't know exactly how it works, but from what I just looked up real quick, you should be within 3 miles from your ISP's hub. I don't know exactly where the hub is, but if I look up my ISP's address, they are 16.9 miles from my house. That is probably why they had me on a 3 megabit connection. Do you think this is why I am having problems? This is the only DSL service I know of that I can get and my there is no cable on my street. So i'm stuck with it.

http://www.dslreports.com/faq/4645 this site has some infromation about dlstance limitations. There is some more factors though depending on types of dsl. Cisco.com might have something more in depth about other vartions of dsl..

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/dsld ... -types.htm

There is ways around the distance factor though such as remote terminals , and maybe more repeaters

I guess they must be doing something to be closer b/c 16.9 miles is over 89,000 feet and that is a lot farter than any distance they listed. When I was on a 3 megabit connection, the highest dowload speed I could get when it was running really good was around 1900 kbps.

So what should I set my optimizer settings to? Is the optimal settngs good enough with the 1 megabit connection? Heres what it is currently set to with optimal checked:

I think they fixed the problem. It is much more stable now. It just sucks that its slower than it use to be when it was working, but there's nothing I can do about that now.

I applied your settings, restarted the computer, and it connected to my wireless network fine, but them when I opened the internet, it sat there and said looking up http://www.google.com (my homepage). Then got the error saying it could not find the page.

I tried going to my modem page by entering 192.168.254.1 and it could not go there either. I restarted the computer again and had the same problems, but now when I try to connect to my wireless router, it hangs at "acquiring network address" for a while and then says "limited or no connectivity". Still can't access the internet or my modem.

Went back to TCP Optimizer, applied optimal settings and restarted again to see if that will do anything. Same problem.

Then I turned on the other computer in my house, which also connects through wireless and that connects with no problems.

Then I connected the (non working) laptop to the modem with an ethernet cable and it works fine.

I didn't change any settings other than the Optimizer, but somehow I can't connect now with wireless on the laptop, but the other computer works fine. Don't know what happened.

If I right click on the wireless network and click "repair", it restarts the network adapter and clears everything. Then it gets stuck at "renewing your ip address".

Have any idea what happened? I'll let you know if I get it working again.

Edit: Also, when it connects and says "limited or no connectivity", the signal strength is full and the speed is 54 Mbps.

I have a bunch of services disabled, but I didn't change anything recently. Everything has been working fine for a long time with the services the way they are.

Also, I cannot connect to my neighbors wireless network either. The same thing happens.

Doing some searching online and it seems that a lot of other people have this same problem, but I haven't been able to find one with a solution yet.

Does this help? From event viewer, under "system".

Event ID: 1006

Your computer was unable to automatically configure the IP parameters for the Network Card with the network address 0014A5A3E319. The following error occurred during configuration: The DHCP client has obtained an IP address that is already in use on the network. The local interface will be disabled until the DHCP client can obtain a new address.

Theres also a bunch of other events. I think they keep repeating when I disable or enable the wireless network to test it.

Reset the router to factory defaults. Didin't help.

I can connect through the modem or the wireless router with an ethernet cable.

So to sum it up, I can connect to my wireless router through ethernet, but not wireless. The problem is only with this computer b/c the other computer can connect through wireless.

In one thread I was reading, someone said they fixed it by resetting the winsock. I might try this, but microsoft says i might have to reinstall programs that connect to the internet, like antivirus.

Another weird problem I just noticed. I though I would try using system restore and restoring back to yesterday b/c my computer automatically sets a restore point every day.

I go into system restore and the last restore point says system checkpoint, which is normal, but it's today at 9:15 PM (technially yesterday). Thats right around the time I started having this problem. So I figured I would go back to yesterday, but there is no restore points other than that one for all of May.

The next one before today is March 31st and then there is one almost every day all the way back to december. What happened to all my restore points in April and May?

It is still on and should be creating a restore point every day, but it's not. I checked my services and I don't even have a service named "task scheduler". I do have one that is named "schedule". I don't know if that is the same though.

So for some reason it stopped making restore points on April 1st and then right when this happens it decides to make one. It almost seems like I got a virus that screwed up my wireless card and then deleted the restore points for the last 2 months. I'll scan, but I don't think that is the problem.

This is really annoying too b/c I use this computer all the time. I probably spend like 10 hours a day on it and I need it to be wireless. Maybe i'll move the modem and router downstairs and plug in through ethernet. :crash:

I think I will do that, but from what I read, I will have to reinstall any LSP's I currently have. I had no idea what any of this was before I just started reading about it, so this is all new to me.

I am going to use the LSP Explorer Plugin from Ad-aware to see what I have installed before I go and erace them. I read that you can back up individual LSP's with the plugin. Hopefully that way I won't have to reinstall any programs that use LSP's.

Maybe I can reinstall one at a time and find out which one is corrupted.

I installed the plugin for ad-aware, but it says it works with ad-aware SE and that is an older version. It is in the plugin folder of ad-aware on my hard drive, but it does not show up in the tools section when I open the ad-aware program.

So I decided to just use the winsock fix program and backup the files before I reset them so I can always go back. When I tried to backup the files, I got an error for every file. Here are the errors.

(Picture removed b/c it has nothing to do with my problem anymore and I don't need to use this program)

Then it said the backup is completed. Now I don't wan't to do it yet b/c I don't want to not be able to backup and cause more problems than I have now. I can still use the internet, it's just a pain b/c I can't use wireless.

Haha, I'm such an idiot. I can't believe I didn't try this earlier.

When the wireless stopped working after I changed the optimizer settings, I just went in and selected optimal settings again and restarted. I figured that would set everything back to how it was when the internet was working.

Guess I was wrong b/c I just went into the Optimizer and restored my settings from a couple days ago before I had this problem using a backup file and everything is fixed. Wireless is working again!

Thanks for all your help, but it seems to be fixed now. I'm going to try and set the settings to the last ones you provided again and see if I lose my wireless again. I'll let you know what happens.

Applied your settings again and restarted. Same problem again. Those settings you provided and my computer dont mix.

Did this analyzer with your settings and connected through ethernet b/c wireless doesn't work.

So whats the difference between the settings that you provided and the settings if I just click optimal? I guess there not optimal then?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using your custom settings?

It's difficult for TCP Optimizer to suit all connection lines in the world ! So why we're here !

Thanks for all your help, it seems to be running good now. Hopefully I won't need anything else anytime soon.

I really should read through the entire documentation and learn how to tweak it myself since i'm always online, but i'm such a procrastinator, lol.
