I need just 5 minutes alone with the makers of that video. So I can turn them into bloody pulps.
Since that won't happen, I'm looking for a place to report that, I don't care if it was just a mouse. I don't see any scientific purpose to that crap, and even if there was, it doesn't justify it.
I'm sorry I viewed it.

Me first. I'll need 4 months, a pair of pliers and a blowtorch… for scientific reasons.

Agreed on the scientific study. Since the mantis food source is bugs......this one seems to be to see who would win.

There’s a picture on the web of a praying mantis eating a humming bird. That happens in nature. What happens inside a glass jar is something else.

Good Lord, it's a freakin mouse!

I'll tell you this, had that jar been larger with a lot more jumping/moving room, I think the mouse woulda won.

Mouse, rat, pig, dog, bear whatever. It's the asshat that shakes the jar and films it... and then puts it on the web.

I agree. Not enough space to move around.

Even though it's obviously made by amateur/immature idiots, it's no worse to me than what you see on the Discovery Channel.

Do you really think that there is ALWAYS a food source that just HAPPENS to be nearby and get into the shot as they're filming some deadly snake? "Here is the Jabubu snake, the deadliest snake in North Swaziland...although he eats mainly field mice, he also eats other snakes. Whatta co-inky-dink, here's his exact favorite type of field mouse now, sniffing around!" GULP.

Eh......what's in the normal world and the spectacle put on the web for your amusement are two different things.

Now if a preying mantis had mice as a food source...whatever. That's just not the case.

Agreed that given more room, they would simply have avoided each other.

I'll say this about a preying mantis. They don't back down from anything when screwed with.

I'm not upset with the short, Burke. I just think it's stupid.

Funny how different folks find divergent visions offensive. I do not think the granola crowd will take to the streets on this one.

Stupid thing to film, yeah, the idea of puttin them in a jar, shaking it about, just to get a fight going.

As for those embracing PETA and saying "cruelty to mice"...it's really no different than say those who own snakes and drop a mouse in the cage for food for that pet Columbian Redtail. Natural food? Yeah, sure, but to the mouse...death is death.

Stretch the comparison further..anyone own oscar fish or snakeheads? Drop live comets in the tank?

oh come on Stonecat. there's no comparison there.

how can you say it's the same as feeding mice to a pet snake? snakes eat mice. do mantis eat mice? h*ll no.

do you drop comets for your oscars to see who'll win, or do you do it because it's their natural food?

in nature, would a mantis and a mouse fight to the death like that? I think not.

the mouse didn't even have a chance on a glass surface. aside from it being too small.

I agree with Ghetto and Norm. as well as Knightmare. What bs this is. it's a mouse and if it happens in the wild cool, but if it happens like that it is wrong. It is just like having a pitbull fighting another pitbull. It is wrong and should not be done.

Yeah, it's pretty long....I'm not sure if a Mantis is poisonous, but I guess that the damn mouse jumped so much, that it got tired, the Mantis pinned it down and went to town.

the Mantis isn't poisonous. They are carnivorous insects that feed primarily on other insects. Their standard M.O. is to bite the neck of their prey so as to make a quick end of struggling, and they prefer to eat their prey while still living.
They are also used by some gardeners to control insect population in the graden (which is how I know about them). You can buy them in 1,000 lots from many mail order seed catalogs. they are also canibals, so when raising them they must be provided with plenty of fresh insects or they will wipe themselves out.
They are also known to occaisionally prey on small reptiles and mammals, such as the mouse.
Their biggest enemy is bats, and they have ultra sound ears in their bodies that they use to detect bats.

Since some snakes can pretty much only survive off of mice, I would say there is a difference. Also many snake owners won't feed live mice to their snakes for fear of the mouse injuring their pet.

I've had several Oscars in the past and initially fed them mass quantities of goldfish. Dry food proved to be better for the fish, their color, and avoiding disease so that is what they got from then on. I've also had boas that I fed mice, but that was all ten years ago and I don't personally care to keep animals in cages anymore.

Although a vegetarian now, I certainly don't embrace PETA. Although they do a lot of good, this good is absolutely overwhelmed by obnoxious ads, inappropriate actions, and ties to some bad people.

I dont think its poisonous but their front feet are very very powerful for their size and have barbs on them. Their front feet are like the jaws to a Pitbull
Notice how it grabbed the mouses head between them? the mouse was bleeding.

Its illegal to kill a Preying Mantis in NY. They eat cockaroaches by the tons.
