if you have norton partition magic, and i'm sure there's other apps out there that can do this too, resize the partiton, and then do an install of sp1 on that new partition. One problem, when the box boots up, by default it will boot to the last OS that was installed, so you have wait by the box as it boots up to select the OS to boot to (assuming you'll primarily be using sp2 OS). depends on how patient you are, how fast your box boots up. if you're one of those people who likes to walk away as the box boots up, it will doubtless irritate you, unless you leave the pc on all the time, and just boot to sp1 as needed.
what i do w/ my boxes is partition the hdd first in setup, make a 3 or 4 Gb partition, then make another partition, then maybe one more depending on the hdd size. then I install sp1 to the small partition. then i install sp2 to the next partition....so it automatically goes to sp2 and i can walk away.
I have a few apps that only work properly under sp1...so that's my workaround.
partition magic has a "pq boot manager", never used it though, so not sure how it works...
I'd be a little wary of going back to sp1 from a sp2 OS, you may very well have program breakdowns...
If it isn't too much work for you, depending on what all you have installed on the box, I'd backup my data on a slave hdd, or on cd, and wipe it, set up a sp1 and sp2 OS's. Such a multi OS setup also comes in handy if the OS gets hosed, you have another OS to boot into and can do alot w/ it, gives some options for repairing or pulling data off...also can scan your main OS for rootkits from the other OS.
I've never had success ghosting an os that was setup on say C:; and then trying to put that image onto D:

i have done it before at work for special cirumstances such as yourself..i even had to rollback win2003server without sp...and worked fine
if when you did the upgrade from sp1 to sp2 you picked the backup option..just go to add/remove, then after it is uinstalled, go to windows update and get all updates esxcept for SP2
if you did not backup from sp1 to sp2...then that wont work..and you better off doing what ghettoside mention or just reinstall from scratch lol

Do you have an original xp install disc?ntvh wrote:Thank you for all of your effort and extra steps to explain 'em for me. If so, you can slipstream sp1 into one install disc, and then slipstream sp2 into another. Save yourself some money. Post if you need help slipstreaming.
If you're going to clean install, might want to try installing the 2 OS's like I mentioned. Can come in handy in a variety of situations.
