If I didn't have doubts I wouldn't have sent it to snopes. If I had seen the original as it was made by the Producers of the commercial there of course wouldn't have been a doubt since it clearly shows it as being a commercial. The online version had all the ad stuff taken out.Burke wrote:I can't believe anyone actually thought that was real.

Well done Pie! I was astounded as well that some people actually believed this was real!! No one nor anything would be anything less than ashes within that close a range, had it actually occurred!thepieman wrote:I wrote them a while back and asked about a video I had posted here. I dunno..I don't know anyone that was actually near to an impact of a meteor so I wan't 100% sure. I guess thats why they were hired to do it. if it looked fake , then I don't think they would get very many jobs. Anyway now that I see that its for sure just a commercial I know 100% and its not just guesses from amateur videographers. At the time I posted the original here no one posted the originating site which would have settled things a lot sooner.MissTynker2 wrote:Well done Pie! toyota has been doing that sort of commercial for a while now. Giving it the 'hand-held camcorder' look. It's designed to trick you into thinking it's real.
Sony did similar pieces to that for the 'Ratchet and Clank' games a few years ago too.

Why did you have to go to Snopes to find out it wasn't real? We told you everything you needed to know.

I dunno...didn't seem like anyone had a definitve answer. Snopes got the site of origin which was cool. Plus it will help other meatheads like me that thought it was real in the future.waferdog wrote:Why did you have to go to Snopes to find out it wasn't real? We told you everything you needed to know.

Im not like some of yo guys with a good eye for CGI unless its in a Big Screen Movie of course. These viral ads making their way across the internet seem very real a lot of times.
So I take it thats a phoney too? See Im not good with that.Jim wrote:but zomg did u here abowt the gients that washt up in indea?

Traditional advertising doesn't quite work as well as it used to, so companies are usually looking for ways to make their ads less....ad-like. Likewise, we've seen almost every sort of visual effect trick at one point or another, so many ads like these are designed to look as if an amateur videographer took it, to make it look more "real." In the case of the video from the original post, while the Toyota logos have been removed, it's pretty obvious that one of the points of the ad/video was to show that the truck was so well-built, even a chunk of rock from outer space could do little to slow it down.thepieman wrote:So I take it thats a phoney too? Also, with the internet, there are plenty of spec ads (unofficial concept advertisements usually made to get a job in the field) of this sort, which are not only fake, but aren't even from the company whose product is being shown. This can sometimes add to the confusion.
And regarding the "news" clip from India, it's another ad for a Sony game. As Blisster pointed out, they've used such tactics before.

Right. Without the Manufacturer logo tho as you said , tho it looked just like guys 4 wheelin out in the desert making a home movie and those guys in the truck were lucky enough that they survived the hit..complete with a 4 wheel ATV falling from the sky in flames. Once I saw the Logo'd commercial it was obvious. They did a great job as a Viral ad its convincing..I was not the only one who thought it was real. There were a lot of people who asked the same question.Jim wrote:so many ads like these are designed to look as if an amateur videographer took it, to make it look more "real." Yeah Im aware of Viral ads, like that Burger King site with the Chicken that does the AI tricks and the Bud Light girl site, they make them appear to be independent projects made by people but they are company sanctioned through back channels in case they don't go over well they can always be denied. Also, with the internet, there are plenty of spec ads (unofficial concept advertisements usually made to get a job in the field) of this sort, which are not only fake, but aren't even from the company whose product is being shown. I would have never known that was a Console commercial. No logos and I don't see any relation to any games through it..Maybe my sons would but Im not familiar with a lot of the new games. Do you know what game it relates to?And regarding the "news" clip from India, it's another ad for a Sony game. As Blisster pointed out, they've used such tactics before.
Thanks for the reply Jim

There's no doubt that these types of clips can be misleading, especially with the logos removed, so it's nice that a place like Snopes can debunk them for people to see.
And you are correct that sometimes a company will blame a viral ad on a spec ad if there happens to be some sort of public outcry over it. It's a good way for them to see how far they can push the boundaries without taking the blame if things go the wrong way. However, there are plenty of people who do still pass of their own spec ads as official advertisements, as that'll usually get them far more exposure (assuming the ad is at least decent) than they'd get otherwise.
The Sony ad was part of a viral campaign, which came from this blog, for the game Shadow Of The Colossus.
