Stopping an exe from accessing the internet...
It was very easy with zonealarm. Now all I have is a firewall in my router. Anyway to do this?

Bleh..."always" not correct answer. Depends on user and users habits.
To me, software firewall is like using a condom for sex AFTER you've caught some STD. Avoid catching that STD in the first place.
For those who date fluesies (this will be the analogy of the dangerous web user who does P2P, surfs porn and warez and serial crack sites, etc).....a condom is a good idea.
For those who are monogomous (analogy of the safe computer user)...I don't want to deal with the nagginess and system slowing down of a software firewall)
There isn't one golden rule which applies to everyone, it's a "use common sense in how you use your computer".

I have not used a software firewall since I got a router several years ago, and to date have not needed a software firewall to block anything either. However, my kids could have benefitted from one at certain poit a couple yrs ago, but now they are educated enough to not get malware anymore.
What about this scenario:
People who ALWAYS use a software firewall in conjunction with a router firewall are the same asexual folks who never wear condoms or get stds, but they do get soft hands and squinty eyes.

But see..perfect scenario...you yourself don't want the bother of one, because you know what you're doing and are confident in your system. Yet your kids...excuse me if I use the term "naive", but most likely not careful, don't know, subject to those drive bys on "questionable" sites, etc. Textbook example of same household, yet different user needs.
