BS Extreme (3000/384) Router Swap - Slow Upload

Post by RiskyBusiness »

I received my RMA'd Router (WRT54G v2) from LinkSys yesterday. Now I'm wondering if there is anything else that I can do here to tweak the speeds a little more. SpeakEasy (atl.speakeasy.net) is currently showing:

2005-05-11 08:09:13 EST: 2493 / 318
Your download speed : 2553726 bps, or 2493 kbps.
A 311.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 325679 bps, or 318 kbps.

While this is the best numbers that I've managed to get since switching to BellSouth's Extreme service, I can't help thinking that they should be a little better. I was expecting a download speed of around 2700 kbps.

TCP/IP Analyzer shows the following:

TCP options string = 020405ac0103030001010402
MTU = 1492
MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for maximum throughput.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 33396
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 33396

RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63888 (MSS x 44)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1335.84 kbps (166.98 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 534.336 kbps (66.792 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 53 hops

TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)

Any idea's on how to increase the throughput?

u know the guys at this foroum are genisus but i can tell u this
rwin is not mmultiples of mss
well it is but
dont let this determine ur rwin and disable anything that does
many belive this is the best way, they have brainwashed by the "old ways"
try this
The formula for finding your "ideal" RWIN, is to take your latency (average ping time in ms x 1.5), multiply that by your advertised (download) speed, and divide that by 8.

100ms
x
1.5
-------150

150
x
6223 but well just say 6000 to prevent overload
-------900000

900000
/
8
----112500 <--------ahhahahhahahha
Rwin is not multiples of mss!! :rtfm:

with the new router hopefully the firmware is up to date and also don't follow that guys advice about the rwin why it doesn't effect upload, make sure your network card is auto or duplex mode .

Firmware is the most current available. Latency all looks good (no loss), but I'm not seeing consistent throughput. Sometimes the dowlink speeds are good but the uplink speeds are slow, other times it's the other way around.

If you haven't already did you update the drivers on the network card make sure both network cards are in 100 full duplex unless you are using a wirelsss network card make sure block wan request is disabled on the router in the status setup it may be in another location of 192.168.xxx page or the router setup page.

Are you using any software firewalls ??

Checked drivers, all up to date. The Router is pingable, and the nic is set to 100 FD. I have XP's firewall, but it's disabled so as not to interfere with test results.
