High speed Internet has arrived

Post by blacklab »

:D :D :D

After many years of dial-up Internet I finally have a hi-speed connection. It is a Tranzo wireless connection running from a tower about 5 miles away. They say they can get good results up to 50 miles line-of-site.

It took them two days to get it working, but that was just because of miss-communication in their office. The spent about two hours the first day and could not get it working and then the expert came out the next morning and spent another 4 hours with no luck. In the meantime I spent considerable time trying things. Read most everything I could find on SpeedGuide and a bunch of stuff on the MS site, but no luck. I know a little more about networking now.

Finally I took my laptop to their office to see if they could get it working there. I have used my laptop in some of the hotels I have stayed in, so I knew it worked. Anyway set it up in their office, plugged it into one of their routers, turned it on and was on the Internet.

They stared checking from their end and found they could not see my dish. I was the first one to get hooked up on this particular radio so they had never checked it out before..

When they could not see my dish they looked a little farther and found there was no MAC address. They had been using a different brand of radio before and the MAC was automatic, this one needs to be set.

Took my laptop home, plugged it in and I was on the Internet. Made a few adjustments to my router and now all four computers are on the Internet. Took me about an hour to make all the changes to the virus scanners, and my e-mail program, but everything seems to be working fine. The only thing I have to do is check if my laptop works in the wireless mode.

Did an update to Win 2K on my brothers computer. Took a little less than 10 minutes to do what took a little under four hours to do on mine. Next I want to find one of these test sites to see how fast it is, and I suppose I will now have to install a firewall.

I suppose minir will be jealous now, :D but for me happy day are here. :D

Cool, I think having wireless broadband would be great, can go alot farther than with your standard wifi router even with a very good amp and antenna on the house. What speeds are you signed up for and do you see them pretty steadily? Hows your latency?

Not sure what the speeds are yet. I have four computers connected to the router, three wireless and 1 direct. I can play music on all of them at once and it doesn't seem to miss a beat. It will take me a while to get used to the speed.

Hopefully within a few days I will find some sites where I can test it. If anyone has any sugestions I would be interested.

Tried a few tests and got various results. I got speeds from 358 to 313 KB/sec. From what I am used to this is great.

I will have to read a little and see if I can get a little better.

Thanks for the site it helps.

And who said Canada did not have technology? Sure beats the two tin cans and a long piece of sting you've been using way up north, eh?

Have fun!

The thing that really hurts is there is a fiber optic line for our provincial Internet buried in my front yard. I can just imagine all the little 1's and 0's rushing up and down it, but I can't get on it. This also means I will not have to lurk around neighborhoods looking for open connections I can use to download the really big files. :D
