Magnesium fire just up the road...
Magnesium fire just up the road...
about 20 minutes away from here...in a factory which has several thousand tons of magnesium. Been burning for a few hours now and they don't have any control over it

magnesium is no joke.... 'specially when it's burning. that's one of the dangers of machining it, too..... if it does catch fire when your turning/milling it, you stand a good chance of losing the machine if you can;t get it put out quickly.
i think water is not an option, either. since it burns in excess of what, 1500 to 2000 degrees, water will just react and make matters worse, no?

My company makes saw blades for Metal Mart and our route driver went to drop off blades one day, there was no building left. I beleive the company is in el monte. Magneisium is no joke. They do not use coolant or oil to cut their peices . All dry. I got freaked out when I delivered blades there one day and realised it was magnesium they were cutting. I took a handfull of the shaving home and showed the kids how metal could burn.
Is it on the news there? Got a link?

(Short answer) When something burns it combines with oxygen. Water is the result to hydrogen "burning"... it already combined with oxygen. You really could say that it already burnt and therefore will not burn again.Mark wrote:if water is 2 parts hydrogen, 1 part oxygen, how come it doesn't burn![]()

Possibly...we could see the glow from the fire last night from our house...

Mg + 2H2O --> Mg(OH)2 + H2
same thing happens with some of the other alkaline earth metals (sodium, lithium, cesium). some just start fire. some explode. i've been witness to a chunk of pure sodium metal "skipping" about a pond. for a while it hits the water it jumps up in a small explosion. chemists have to have fun too. heh.

Just the one from the newspaper article above...I'm far enough away that I wouldn't be able to take any pictures of it...

Just like table salt.. its made up of Na + Cl.. two substances that are very leathal. However, when mixed together, they produce soemthign you put in your frenchfries. In a chemical reaction, you get completely different propertiesMark wrote:if water is 2 parts hydrogen, 1 part oxygen, how come it doesn't burn![]()

Looks like the fire was initially fueled by the plant's sprinkler system. Ironic, isn't it?

I guess the Japanese Zero in WWII burnt "bright" when they were shot down.
