Our Apologies

Post by TEH WIN »

Monday December 2, 2002

Dear Jason Boggs,

Due to a technical error between Office Depot and Amazon.com, your recent
order with us has been cancelled for the Labtec Cordless Keyboard and
Mouse. We realize that you may have spent some time with us in making your
purchase, and have come to depend upon us for fair pricing, and we truly
apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

As our Company Policy clearly states, ". While Office Depot tries in good
faith to make sure that the information displayed is accurate, they are
not responsible for typographical errors or technical inaccuracies." We
are sorry for not being able to honor your purchase.

Again, we apologize for this unforeseen error. If you have any questions,
please to reply to this email. We look forward to your continued support
and patronage in the future.

Kind regards,
Gerald P. Major. Jr.

Dear Amazon and Office Depot,

I had planned to do much of my my Christms shopping on Amazon, including many CDs,
DVDs, and several large print books for my grandmother, but I will take my
business elsewhere now.

Thanks anyway,

Jason Boggs

Amazon.com had the wrong price listed on their webpage for an item that was being sold by officemax.com. It was a wireless keyboard and mouse the price was listed as $4.95 when it should have been $44.95
Respect it.

thing is though... if you go to any store and you see a 399.95 item marked 39.95, they must sell it to you at that price.

same should go for online, but i guess there's no "police" to enforce that

"they must" is not entirely true. I work at bby and this has happened a couple of times. One that comes to mind is a 32" TV that was priced wrong...basicly 200.00 off its normal price. Our sales manager told the customer "it was an honest mistake, we will not sell you that tv for that price" (in a stern voice).

Then again we have had customer tape UPC's over the original UPC on vaccuums.

some customers are pretty tricky ;)

that depends on local law.

here in western NY, they HAVE to give you the price listed.

this is the way I see it.

If they either dont charge my credit card, or give me my money back INSTANTLY... then all is not lost.

disney pulled crap like this with a coupon. They then shipped it anyway without telling the customer the coupon wasnt going to be accepted and gave them ALL kinds of sh*t about it.

I talked to them today and they were nice about it. I dont blame office depot for it, I blame amazon. I think if a couple of hundred had been ordered... it would have worked. However, I bet there were 10k at least ordered.

I figure... at least they werent so stupid to ship it anyway and not try and fix the sitution, unlike disney.

Not so. If it slips by the cashier, you win, but when something is obviously mis-priced they can refuse the sale. You can argue about it but you would probably lose.

whats the big deal? so they made a mistake! so what!
if you have a problem with your toyota does that mean you will never again buy another toyota ? does that make toyota a bad evil company? I don't think so.
these are only humans that prepare the ads and online sites.
I have made plenty of orders from Amazon over the years, especially at xmas time and I have never had one problem with them.Retailers make that typo price mistakes all the time.
did'nt it send up a red flag at $4.95 to you anyway?did'nt that seem too good to be true?and maybe should have been questioned first?
:) IMHO

i sort of have to agree...i work retail and i've seen pricing mistakes before a ton..it happens..usually it isn't a big deal to honor it, but when you're talking about thousands or hundreds of dollars lost...allowing a decision like that will eventually drive a company bankrupt..no matter their size :( unfortunately.. i think, tho, they could have offered a $5 online gift card or something for the mistake.. shrug just my 2c

I have been in retail for 25 years and I have to agree, that $5 or whatever would have been a nice touch. :)

it's what we do all the time..some customers are understanding..some just aren't and think that the store should put itself out of business to make them happy..I don't understand it sometimes, but like I said, some are understanding :) the great thing is a gift card works wonders..it doesn't have to be huge..just something to show appreciation for the customer's time and business..and people will understand. I've been working retail for a little over 3 years.. it's my first job..part time while I attend school..

yep! you're right,I have been in management for half those 25,and it's really easy to make a customer happy, and stop the buck there, every situation is different, but>>>

a small gesture goes miles.

thank god!

I was the one who originally posted this and I do feel about what happened. I'm just happy that the people here have the freakin intelligence to see the reality of what happened. Too often, people just dont freakin THINK. Yeah, I would have loved for it to have worked out... but I'm not losing any sleep over this. I understand they cant afford to let things like this just happen, but they're not ripping me off at all either.

Office depot rocks by the way. They've done so many things for me, matching prices and no problem returns. Office depot, office max and circuit city have never let me down.

heck, I took back a cdr mp3 player to circuit city after I had used it for SEVEN MONTHS. I didnt buy a extended warr either. I explained it had never worked right and had just realized it after using a friends.

holy smokin, they gave me a new one!
