[Laptop]Protege 301ct Toshiba...Backlight problem?

I've got a Toshiba Protege 3010ct lying here that I've come to the conclusions that either it needs a new backlight, or its dead. I can compare the screen to a Gameboy Advanced when in the dark, it's hard to see and I don't think it can be a contrast/brightness issue because of the lack of controls the laptop has. I've also noticed that a portion of the monitor (the top-right of the laptop) is getting unusually warmer than the other parts, sounds to me like something is burning there and or burnt out. Any take on this?
