Once they've got you they've got you. The newest guys dont even have permision to leave base sometimes. Even on weekends. The military isnt a 9-5 job.

ive been thinking about joining the af, tho the marines did offer me one heck of a job...just don't know about that with all the crap going on in the world, remember every marine is a rifleman!!
I keep getting mixed reviews about the military! Like my bro was navy and the way he talks about it it SUCKED, probobly had to do with the 6 months on the ship. Then i talk to my cousin whose AF and hes making a career and supporting his family with it.....
honestly its kinda confusing....probobly one of those you get what you put into it things....

Most of the time the 'Command' (Unit you're attached to) determines one's impression of the military. For example: If you are in a good unit you'll have a blast and quite a few really fun memories. If the unit isn't so good it'll be the worst thing you ever did in your life.Originally posted by JBKM

You hit the nail on the head. If you're motivated, stay out of trouble, do what your told, etc... only good things will come. If you're a 'slacker', get into trouble all the time (there will be times you make mistakes, but most are forgiven), etc... then your life will be h3ll.

My view
These are my observations based on experiences with the varying branches. There are smart people and dumb people in each branch. Good officers and bad NCO's and vice versa.
If you want a technical career, with the best schools and best living conditions, join the Air Force.
If you want to spend time away from home working in a more industrial environment, if you like getting greasy and getting down and dirty to fix something or, if you just like the sea, join the Navy.
If you want to blow stuff up, fill out paperwork, blow more stuff up, and fill out more paperwork, and especially if you like loud noises and wearing green, join the Army.
If you want to Mike Tyson someone's ear or live in a very strict, structured environment, joint the Marines.
I've worked with all four branches. I've been on bases belonging to all these branches. The Air Force has the best gear. The Navy spends the most time away from home. The Army blows up the most stuff, and the Marines are always high and tight and have the best discipline.
Advancement in the Air Force is hardest. Second is the Marines, Third is the Navy and easiest is the Army. Mind you, the authority that goes with each rank in each branch differs based on the difficulty of achieving that rank.
I can't tell you which branch to join. That's up to you. The questionsyou have to ask yourself are these:
What's your goal at the end of your enlistement?
Is this a career?
Is it for college money?
Is it for self discipline?
What is it you want to achieve?
Once you figure out the answers to these questions, your path will be a bit easier.
Also, one final note, and let me be very clear about this. GET EVERY PROMISE MADE TO YOU BY A RECRUITER IN WRITING. NOTHING, AND I MEAN NOTHING, COUNTS IF IT ISN'T ON PAPER. ALWAYS GET THEM TO PUT YOUR SCHOOLS AND BONUSES AND EVERYTHING IN WRITING. ALWAYS!

Excellent advise, but you already knew that! Where were you 17 years ago?
Yes, there is an Air Force reserve! I am not sure where the closest is to you but, you can probably find out if you check the Air Force Reserve website. Here is a link
