Cable Modem Reviews

Post by D0M1N8R »

OK guys. Ive searched on google/yahoo/msn and now I turn to the people that I have read up on for my broadband info needs for so long.

I need some links to good reviews. Not no "this is a good modem" review. One's full of info. Please give me the links!!!!!

Ive noticed the ones I have found are really old. I mean like 99 stuff. So I guess I should mension I'm also looking for some pretty recent stuff. Like 1 year old is ok but 6 months or less would be perfect.

Thanks in advance.

P.S.
Dont buy a Toshiba PCX1100
They suck. This is what Im trying to replace. Continuos problems with this modem and my friend has same one and always has problems with it to.
Now the service tech who came to my house and the rest of Cox tech's on phone say these modems are nothing but problems. But my waranty is over so buy another. >=-( Gotta love that.
They also said that "It's a modem firmware problem that does not work well with our network. We've been trying to resolve this for some time."

Since I currently own a Linksys 8 port router (BEFSR81) I am seriously thinking of there BEFCMU10 ver.2 which seems to have the highest claim on there upload/download speeds. My linksys switch I bought cuz this site rated it high and I have loved it. Runs rock solid and has no effect on my ping on games what so ever.

The other big factor is that it will stack up n my router. Any one have any opinions on this cable modem?

Before this POS Toshiba =) I used to have A motorola cybersurfer ad absolutly loved that. So my confidece in Motorola quality and products is high as well. So I am also thinking of there latest modems.

SB4220

It also supports latest Docsis 2.0 which would be a relief if my ISP decided to switch on over.

Just cant make up my mind. Please help.

edit: Reread the file and it support docsis 1.0 - 1.1 but does not claim to support 2.0. It says it uses some docsis 2.0 hardware.

Modems are pretty much all the same. Some have minor differences in design, especially in the RF area, whcih is where the Toshiba came to grief on certain systems. It was partly Toshiba's fault, partly the cable company's.

Probably the most important criteria is whether the modem is on the ISP's list of supported modems. If it is not, some techs will blame the modem for every problem you encounter.

Speed is not an issue.

I have been running the PCX1100U for 1.5 years with zero problems.
I was going to buy a new modem, but for what? Just because you have had a problem, does not warrant the blanket remark,"they suck."
Almost everyone blames the poor cable modem for their cable problems. That includes the service people who come to your house. Why? Easy to blame, most people will buy it, the fastest way not to fix the problem and be out the door.
Other posts I enjoy for example is,"Coxs Sucks!" Will, each city that has Cox is like your local 7/11 store. They are a franchise operation.
I always enjoy at least a 2 meg and above download speeds 24 hours a day.
If I was going to rush out to buy a new modem, it would be the SB4220 for $75.00.
Repair up date: If you have a Cox installed 3 way splitter, have them remove it if you are having internet problems. Reason: They are having problems with this product. Correct the problem by using 2/2 ways and remove the 3 way.
Check that out before you rush out and spend $$$. Make sure your service line is grounded to the closest power(breaker box) and not to the aluminum conduit which runs out of your breaker box. Water supply line is best.
Remove all third party splitters like Radio Shack that people rush out to buy. People seem to really enjoy those gold ones, look nice, but pure junk.
Clean up all that free software people really enjoy. Most of all, run a lean clean computer.
Last clean up all traces of AOL from your computer.
Hope this helps somebody................

Me Too =(
I was going to buy a new modem, but for what? Just because you have had a problem, does not warrant the blanket remark,"they suck."

Well you can count my friend in too. He also is experiancing same problems and has been told he need new modem as well.
Hey you can even count all them Cox customers that Cox says are having problem. With that much said "They Suck." =)
Now you say you have had no problems. Well good for you. And you where going to buy a new modem based on my post? ok

Almost everyone blames the poor cable modem for their cable problems. That includes the service people who come to your house. Why?

Ill try to remember to ask them next time there here.
Easy to blame, most people will buy it, the fastest way not to fix the problem and be out the door.

It could be personal experiance like going to 100 peoples houses and 90 of them are this modem. Could be cuz they hooked up there equipment and every aspect of the line turned out to be 10X better than it has to be. Could be a million reasons but build you own presumptions.
Other posts I enjoy for example is,"Coxs Sucks!" Will, each city that has Cox is like your local 7/11 store. They are a franchise operation.
I always enjoy at least a 2 meg and above download speeds 24 hours a day.

This is where I was at upto the point now where I am ready to purchase A new modem to test there theary. If it dont work well then its hell on the phone and modem gets returned free of charge at some store like bestbuy with no restocking fee.
If I was going to rush out to buy a new modem, it would be the SB4220 for $75.00.

Thats really all im looking for is opinion but would like little thought as well. Like reasons why? is it just because its cheaper then the competition?

I wont quote last part of your post =)
Thanks for the info and im glad all cases mensioned do not apply!!!
I love the last one bout cleaning up all traces of AOL. LoL but no worries. AOL software does not touch my puters. Gaim on my linux computer and Trillian for my M$ computer!!!

Kip thanks for the info. The modem is on the list of supported modems for my ISP (And with as many problems they claim to be having with them I dont know why) and was purchased directly from my ISP.

Here is the list of supported modems. I have been using this as part of my guide line as well since I did think about them blaming the modem if it's not part of the list.

The modem SB4220 and BEFCMU10 ver.2 are both on the list as well!!!

Anyone wanna give a shout out for any of the listed modems? =) please tell me your reasons why to.

Thanks.

Above it was mentioned

.::::::::::::::::::::
Remove all third party splitters like Radio Shack that people rush out to buy. People seem to really enjoy those gold ones, look nice, but pure junk. ::::::::::::::

That's not only true, it got me a visit from a man in a white van a long time ago.

I saw someone poking around in the front of my house and a gentleman came up to let me know i was leaking Signal and he had to investigate and repair. After discussing his credentials i realized who he was and let him have access to find the problem.
The problem was a radio shack splitter amp. He removed it, Ran some cable, refitted all my splitters replaced a length of cable with better grade cable and went on his merry way. I was stunned that i was actually interfering with regulations that dictate signal generation and further stunned this guy was so helpful! I guess all government guys are not so bad after all.

That person little does he know, gave me my start into this field i currently work.

Have had the same problems with my Toshiba PCX 1100. Was hooked up with Cox for 3 years and thought the lousy performance was normal until I moved to another state and hooked up with Adelphia. My neighbor came over and said my cable performance should not be that bad. It turned out to be the TOSHIBA modem. I leased an Ericsson HM 200c from Adelphia and I was amazed to see the internet connection fly. No more interruptions in my signals like I had seen in streaming music or interactive video games. TOSHIBA sent me another as a replacement; it did the same crummy job as my original Toshiba.

Word of wisdom to any one looking for a modem... don't get a Toshiba PCX 1100!

We thought Cox cable ISP was slow but now that we have found a cable modem other than the Toshiba PCX 1100 our service is great. It's like night and day. For those who claim their Toshiba PCX 1100 are great modem's, I ask them how many times they can stream music, radio, or video on Windows Media Player and not get any interruptions; or click on a URL and have to click several more times to get a response and then wait 10 seconds to arrive at the site; or be a player on a interactive PC game server and has loss of connection after loss of connection flashing on the screen. Have used an Ericsson (Aastra) HM 200c and a Motorola SB4200 cable modem and "What a Difference in connection reliability and consistency" compared to the crummy Toshiba modem. It's like a whole new internet connection with either of these two other modems. After 3 years putting up with the problem with Cox, now I realize it wasn't Cox but the lousy Toshiba PCX 1100 modems (2 different Toshiba PCX 1100) that I have used. Recommend the Ericsson (which you probably have to lease from your ISP) or the Motorola SB 4200... Both are rock solid. Take my word.

Guess I got to view all these new post little to late. I went out and got the Linksys BEFCMU10 V.2

So far no more connection interrupts on Quake 3!!!
I am noticing some lag yet but it seems to have solved most of my problems. Ive only tested on one Quake 3 server and I will post back on more accurate findings then just somewhat good experiance at 1 server which is well known for there spikes. LoL well till then Keep me informed on your findings.
I am finding this post to be very informative on peoples experiance so please keep it coming!!!

For those of you with the Toshiba PCX100U have your provider run diagnostics on the modem. I have been having varied connection/speed problems for a few weeks. Yesterday I finally got a hold of an intelligent level 3 tech support guy and after he ran diagnostics on it his words were "There is a slew of error codes in it" and "this doesn't surprise me"
Needless to say they are on their way out to replace it as i'm writing this.
He wasnt surprised at all by the error codes but by the amount of them. Apparently they are having problems with them at Road Runner or at least he has seen several problems.
Good luck.

Here in Phoenix Cox only offers the Terayon TJ 715, soon it will be coming to you.
They no longer offer any other modem.
Just though I would update with this info.

I really want to test my connection out. Whats a good program??????

I have a traceroute program that does pretty good in linux but looking for something in windows because there seems to be a spike problem still. seems better but not eliminated.

The traceroute problem is simply a tracing program that you can set how often it pings per second. This setting high stresses the connection and also shows you were the packets are dropped.

If someone can let me know of something like this on windows your a god.

All software that test the connection are welcome however!!!

I printed out this thread. Took it to Cox. Since I have many accounts, they gave me the Terayon TJ 715 to test out for free.
I will report on it time to time.

I look forward to seeing your findings!!!

As for my experiance, My download speed has gone up noticably. In the switch I noticed that My 1100 would start good on download. Say like 480 - 500KB/s and drop down within 2 seconds to 320 to 360KB/s. I thought this was a cap issue where the system somehow allowed my download to start uncapped and then capped me.

My new modem starts off at same speeds but maintains a higher speed. Infact higher then I ever seen but not incredibly faster. 403.8KB/s 82MB file took 3min 35secs to download. Stable at 403.8 the whole time!!!
That in it self also makes me think since on my toshiba the speed would constantly go up and down by as much as 50 - 100KB/s . New modem stayed so stable that 403.8 was all I saw after first 2 secs.
