Firewalls

Post by Cypher »

I usually use Sygate 5.0. I've disabled all unneeded services in XP, and I wonder how much I realy need one.(?) I do have a cable connection so I keep one. From what I see Sygate seems to have the least hit. ZoneAlarm really sucked. For me anyway. This was realy the case when I tried to uninstall it. I've gone Sygate ever since.

Software firewalls are only good for hiding your computer from MASS port scans, where someone is scanning hundreds or thousands of computers at once.
If someone is targeting you specifically, and wants to hack you, your firewall isn't going to save you. Firewalls are just code, and code can ALWAYS be cracked.
A real firewall is that old 386 machine you have from 6 years ago, set up between your cable modem and your nic card. Thats one even the cops would have a hard time breaking down.

I have a Dell Optiplex W/ A 486(166MHz) & 96MB of RAM.
A) How do I set it up as a firewall?
B) Will it slow my connection down?

Do a google search on setting up a hardware firewall. A router is not the same thing . It will not slow your connection down at all if done correctly. All you need is a couple of NIC cards and some twisted pair.
