Without Wep

Post by phil22407 »

If I'm connected to a wireless ap, without wep connected, but connecting through a vpn, can the information in the air be intercepted and seen? What if I'm browsing with explorer, with an encrypted page, can someone intercept and see the information I sent over the page? Thanks

Wep is basically encryption to stop "snooping" in the airwaves near the AP (data trans from laptop to the AP, approx 100-300 feet). It also can be helpful in keeping people off your AP, since with wep enabled, they'd need the "key" to access your AP network. It's not extremely strong, and has been cracked, but it's better than nothing.
VPN and encrypted web pages encapsulate the data for transmission across the WWW (wep doesn't effect here).
I'd enable wep (just because). To enable your vpn use, be sure to set the router to allow ipsec and pptp. And, if someone really wanted your packets bad enough, "where there's a will there's a way!
