I just bought one of the WD SE 80gbs. It is extremely quiet, silent really...and I don't have any 80000cfm l337 fans, either.
As for brand loyalty....it shouldn't exist with PC hardware. After all, IBM used to make the best drives on the market. I consider all of my PC purchases on a case by case basis.
I had tons of trouble with WDs when I was a tech back in the mid to late 90's. Like 30% of them were bad out of the box. Now they're back on top.
Bottom line: The WD SEs rule.
Test running..........

(At least 56 times faster than a 56k modem)
Logged result.
Finish.

Huh...in my years in the industry...WD's built a reputation for being the most reliable drives out there.
They've never been the top performers (until the SE came out), and they used to be known for running hot....but they've always been the ones that "take a lickin'..and keep on tickin' "
