Windows 2000 freezes when I try to defrag
Windows 2000 freezes when I try to defrag
I've tried diskeeper, windows defrag, norton speed disk, and nothing seems to work! It anyalyzes just fine, but about 10 seconds into actually moving data, my computer freezes up. Here's what's running in the background:
system idle process
system
SMSS.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE
CSRSS.EXE
SERVICES.EXE
LSASS.EXE
mstask.exe
svchost.exe
SPOOLSV.EXE
DKService.exe
svchost.exe
Navapsvc.exe
NPROTECT.EXE
regsvc.exe
NOPDB.exe
WinMgmt.exe
mspmspsv.exe
explorer.exe
SymTray.exe
khooker.exe
Navapw32.exe
ACMonitor_X83.exe
AcBtnMgr_X83.exe
Directcd.exe
internat.exe
Cacheman.exe
I'm trying to defrag a WD HD (400AB) and it's NTFS. I have 20.4GB free. Please help, if you can! Thanks in advance

Re: Windows 2000 freezes when I try to defrag
you don't have enough ram and cpu for all the stuff running in the background, and windows defragmenting also. Besides.. NTFS is slower than you thinkOriginally posted by Mikerad

Thanks guys. This board and its members are a great resource.
Well, I tried in Safe Mode and had the same problem. According to Cacheman, I have over 100MB free all the time, so I still don't know what the problem is...

Are you sure the system is froze? What happens when you ctrl+alt+del? Can you get to task manager? If so does it say that defrag is not responding? I have seen drives that were so full that it took forever to defrag because it was moving very small amounts off data to make room for the larger files. Try lowering you pagefile size and see if that helps. Better yet if you have another partition or drive move it.
With 98se, I always turn off everything except Explorer and SysTray, then run cleanup and defrag.

Re: Windows 2000 freezes when I try to defrag
Since you have tried other defragmenting programs, but not once did I see that you have tried O&O Defrag.. the recommended Defragmenting Utility for Win2k&WinXP NTFS..Originally posted by Mikerad

There is a Trial Full Working Version at this place.
When you say that your computer freezes up, does it completely freeze up like you can't move your mouse, you can't get your keyboard to respond to the ctrl+alt+delete. I suppose there might be other symptoms of a froze computer. Also, are you overclocked because sometimes that really affects the stability of you computer. Other issues to look at here.. have you tried running
chkdsk /f
from the run box in you startmenu>run
type chkdsk /f
might have to type cmd
(enter)
then do it from the there.
type chkdsk /f
(enter)
then hit y
(enter)
You agreed to let your OS, run a chkdsk, after you reboot.
you can however, do a cleanup of whatever you don't want on your drive.
Then defrag.
using M$ Defrag
or whatever defragmenter tools you have.
just one though.
I see in your last post -- you have cacheman, its good however but if you have some settings not configured right, you could be actually freeing up the ram used for defragmenting.
Better yet.. if you give me a system report. I can see somethings that are really need to help you out.. even though you are asking for help with this situation, there might me somethings wrong
open OuterTechnologies Cacheman and at the top where it reads File.. click there and get a Create a System Configuration report. name it sysrpt8-4.txt
Now go back to cacheman.
hit alt+f then o
that will copy the report to the clipboard. it reveals what is on your system.. tells you other things too.. but since you have it in your clipboard..
come back here and post it in this thread and we'll get that all squared away for ya too.
Cacheman is good in that is has a cute gui, and it does what it says it does. And you don't have to hunt down things in the registry and edit your autoexec.. but since I'm off topic here..
and getting back on topic here..
If you have some space on your harddrive, like 20GB free. you might benefit having a second NTFS partition on that drive. just so you can put some data there. and when you do that you free up some data on your other drive. but the thing to notice here is that when you do that you actually move the data to the other harddisk but it is not fragmented.. then you can move it right back and it brings it back and its not all fragmented. I don't know why its that easy but it works for me.
The only other thing that I can think to do if in your situation, I would try O&O Defrag, and let it do its thing, but if you see that your not moving any data, but notice some cpu usage, then I wouldn't worry about it because its still working.

I do as well, but in this case its Win2K and there is prolly something else wrong, no relation to Win98Se.

Well, I haven't had a chance to do a system report yet, but I'm gonna give O&O defrag a shot. And, it freezes totally, as in the mouse stops moving and Ctrl+alt+del doesn't do anything. I'll post again tomorrow after my job interview...
