Cmd.exe

Post by SVO-1 »

all of a sudden - a black command prompt window has started fashing on my screen about every 3 seconds. it says c\windows\system32\cmd.exe in the header (i think - it only stays there about a 1/2 second) but nothing in the box. it just keeps flashing. it's flashing now it pops up maximized on top of what ever is on the screen.
Thanks -

That's the MS-DOS prompt emulator in Windows NT (command prompt).

Anything in your start up menu?

Recent anti-virus with up to date definitions and scan recently?

I'd download an up to date spyware/trojan scanner, like ad aware, or pest patrol...and scan.

ya - i been running NortonCorporate for a few months and manually update it every day or 2. i also use "the cleaner" & adaware5.82 (everything is up to date). nothing in the start-up menu looks odd. that window has always poped-up when i boot up. it would come up and stay for about 2te seconds, then go away right when desktop came up but then it would go away and i wouldn't see it again until i rebooted. now it constantly flashes.

since my original post, things have gone downhill dramatically. i attempted to restore a back-up copy of my registry that i just saved in cablenut adjuster a few days ago but it wouldn't let me - i got an error about some parts of the registry being not accessible. i restarted puter and got "bsod". won't even boot now. get an error about windows not starting to prevent my system from being damaged. tried to start in "safe mode" and got the same thing. W T F ! ! ! ! !

i'm thinking i have some sort of virus, right ? ? ? ? ? is there another way to get back into windows to try running virus scanner ? ? ? ? ?

Try hitting F8 after BIOS posts, but before windows starts and select "Last Known Good Configuration"
That may get you to windows.

If so, then run sfc /scannow and have your win2k CD handy.

Hope that works :)

thanks anyway everybody - i just got impatient and went ahead and did what i KNEW would fix it.
