XP Pro & IE6 help

Post by Ken »

Hey guys,
I have been busy and haven't had a chance to really try to find the cure, but this is getting annoying!
So maybe you guys may be able to make life easy for me and lend a hand!

It appears to be random, doesn't matter how many windows that I have open, nor which site I am on, but every so often, say 5 or 6 clicks, even here at SG, I will get a error, can not find server, blah blah blah. I have to click refresh to make the page then open.

This really ticks me off as it has caused me to lose a post that I have typed, or whatever...

It happens at any given time.

My 98 box on my LAN does not have this problem, so I can rule out connection, modem, etc...

I have >1GB ram and use XP pro, so that isn't an issue.

Does it whether I have rebooted lately or not...

Trusted site or typical inet site, doesn't matter...

This has been going on since day 1, fresh install on a new box.

IE6 has been repaired and such, no difference.

Happened before I even set up my host file...

Does anyone else using XP have this prob?

Is it a tweak or setting that I have missed?

Any ideas?

Help! :)

Thanks in advance!

Same thing here. With total randomness in xp-pro I will get a "no server" alert, but refresh works every time. I'm new to xp-pro and looked around a bit at MS website, but I have not found an answer. Could it be a time out issue related to xp-pro's security features?

Me? nahhh, i like IE6. I tried that opera, it was a hassle and i don't like netscape. I'll just hang in there and see if it clears up. Maybe the problem is at their end.

take heart Kenneth . With XP Service Pack 1 coming out you will have the option of uninstalling IE6. from there you can downgrade to IE 5.00 or IE 5.50

I like that the justice dept. did a good job of getting dirty Microshaft to give us the option to unload the garbage-ware that MS keeps putting into each iteration of windows.

Yes, it is wierd and annoying. If it had a consistant pattern or something, it would make it easier to track down the cause...

Oh well, maybe someone with more time than I have will find the solution...

Ken, I don't have a solution. I know IE 6 has a few bugs yet though. You could try the latest java virtual engine and see if it helps. I've used it on a few machines and fixed other glitches in IE 6 with it. Also, when you installed IE 6 did you do a custom install, and update everything in the list? (other than language support you don't need)

http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm40.htm or go directly to the exe file.

Try clearing your temporary internet files when this happens and see if it fixes it or renew your IP start - run ipconfig /renew. :)

Hey mnosteele52! :)
Thanks, but I have tried those already.

I will be in Norfolk, Monday, June 24 and then heading up to Rockville, MD. We are planning a SG get together Fri night, June 28, Sat., June 29 and Sunday, June 30.
TonyT has asked if we want to BBQ at his place in VA.
Anyway, please check this thread and give a post if you can make it! I hope you can! :)

I've had the same problem with IE6. Back dated to 2k for my MCSE class and haven't seen the problem yet. Has to be IE 6.

1 thing that I have noticed is it seems to open the window so fast that it doesn't have time to even translate the addy.
As soon as I click the button, if it is going to open as an error, it will show done before I even release the click...

Has anyone else noticed this?

I'm sure you've tried it but..... have you reinstalled IE?

Insert the Win XP CD, start - run and type: rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf

Press Enter

Hey mno,
Yes, tried that a few times as well as Normy's suggestion. No go... :(

Thanks for the thoughts though! :)

It does appear to be inherent in IE6...

Anyone else with any input, experiences, ideas, etc...
TIA

Hey Tryn,
I guess that I should have mentioned that Philip had made that same tweak a while back...
