Why not let the new Viper Compitition Coupe do it? Be pretty neat to have the pace car faster than the cars racing :D Actually if I got to pick any (domestic) I would pick the Stryker Viper. I mean its got a Flame Flag paint job on it. In case any of you alot of money to buy a new toy, look here.

When I went to the 500 in '96, they had the viper for the pace car...my wife and I were driving on 16th street, approaching the speedway prior to the race that year, when off to our left out of a parking lot came about 100 vipers on to the road...we were literally surrounded in my little mustang by dozens and dozens of vipers...I wish I had had my camera ready (it was in the trunk) :(

Lemme clear the air on the Indy cars.

Aside from a pure drag car, nothing this side of F-1 cars, IMSA GTP, and a handful of the european formulas are gonna hold a candle to the Indy cars. They are silly quick, light and gobs of power....granted F-1 cars will dust em, but not by leaps and bounds.

Simple math....1400 pound car(I dunno, sounds about right) 600 bhp, center of gravity about three feet below ground, and hyper-sticky tires. A 3800 pound(hell I'll give the viper 3000, I'm in a generous mood), and MAYBE 800 bhp, the numbers don't add up.
Hope that helps a bit.

JCOS: that would be funny to watch!! heheheheh :D

As far as the stats on those vipers...WHY not use the VENOM 800's? I KNOW ive seen viper 0-60's of 3.3 seconds. I believe it was the venom 800 that did it.....

if competeing with nascar...might as well use the best!

As far as corvettes go...id rather have a TRANS AM ws6...any day of the week!! :D

I meant CART, I hate that the decision to split that bunch up was made. The CART cars are wicked, but a full-blown prototype(read Audi R8) or a F-1 car will beat em.

Man, the Cart/IRL split was the worst thing Tony George could have done, in my opinion...it drove the established drivers out (ie, Michael Andretti, Al Unser, Jr, et al) and left a void at the 500 for a number of years that featured drivers that had virtually no history when it came to motor racing...

In all honesty, the best of times for the 500 (at least in my memory) was back in the early 80's, during the days of Rick Mears, Gordon Johncock, Kevin Cogan (anyone remember his rookie year? ;) Can we say, 'wipe out the front two rows"? :D ), Mario Andretti, & others...

Even with the Cart/IRL split, it looks like things are on the mend...from the sounds of it, the two may rejoin in a couple of years...

Probably because the Venom 800 is not a factory produced car. And probably because only 1 or 2 of them exist. And probably because they are as unreliable as any tuner car out there. And probably because John Hennesey is a friggin' crook and a disgrace to tuner's everywhere. And probably....
