cable internet without modem???

Hi
My local cable operator is offering cable internet.He claims that I dont require a cable modem and all that I will require will be a LAN or NIC card.
Is he talking thru his hat?
If its possible,will there will be any major probs I may face?

this is either a new trend or that he is completely crazy or dumb...

how can u access the internet thru a cable line without a cable modem.. I can see how you might do it by having the cable modem out side of the house and just bring in the cable straight to the line.. but that's just crazy talk...

I don't think he's right tho.... ask again...

Need something to convert the RF and QAM signal to ethernet. It should be a cable modem! I can't think of any other way to do it. I would be careful if this guy thinks that it can be done without a cable modem. If he is wrong I can't imagine how a service call would go!

Maybe he just meant you don't need to already have one? Supplied by them in other words.

Who's the provider?

I guess it could be an internal modem, though I don't recall hearing about any internal cable modems. I know there are internal DSL modems.

With a service like WOW, your basically just added to their network, somewhat like adding another client computer to a LAN, so no modem is used. If anyone has any info on exactly how it works, I'd like to hear about it: glc@c-email.com or PM me.

This is similar in idea to FTTH (no DSL modem use; just NIC), which is offered by some telcos. Very interesting technology.

Thank you all for your feedback.
Mike and glc1 are right.I got back to my cable operator and confirmed that no cable modem will be required at all.He also says that I will get a constant download and upload speed unlike the case with cable modems where the speed decrease drastically with increasing numbers of users.
The interesting thing is, he says this technology is being used to make cable internet more attractive since the overall cost goes down considerably since no expensive cable modem is required.Many people were balking at the investment required in getting a cable modem.Now,even infrequent internet users,for whom dial-up is more cost-effective, are showing interest.

Interesting! Speed decreases "drastically" with increasing numbers of users. Sounds like the advertising hype is at it again. Isn't the Internet a "shared" media? If so then it would slow down drastically with the amount of users. So everyone would have the decrease in speed. Cable companies monitor the circuits to ensure that they aren't overloaded. Some do it better than others! Everyone of the "slow speed" problems I have seen are do to the Internet and the Website visited, not to our system.

Granted that he may be wrong about the 'constant speed' bit,this technology still makes a better option than the current one which requires cable modems;much more economical and no worse than the cable modem - requiring cable internet.
Sounds like the death-knell for the cable modem manufacturing industry!LOL!
