Stability Problems w/ Comcast

Post by Stevpear »

The thing is, when this cable service works, it's a godsend. Blazingly fast downloads (with DAP5), LPB-ness when playing games online, and good transfer rates over Morpheus.

The problem is the service frequently 'hangs'. Downloads stop dead in their tracks, Morpheus transfer rates slip and fall past 56k range, and my online games freeze up. This happens very frequently -- about 10-60 minutes pass between each 'hang'.

Is this just a fact of broadband life, or can I change it in some way? I have not installed the 'Comcast Software'. In fact, I can't even find it.

Steve:

I live in the South Jersey area (Vineland) and, for the past 3 or 4 days, speeds have been horrible. Prior to that, download were pretty steady... but, for the past 3 or 4 days, it seems as if the net is clogged with molasses (at least for users in the Philly / South Jersey area). I used to be about 1.2 M down... today, my bandwidth was measured at 738 down (from phl.speakeasy.net). Not sure if the net is congested in our area, or Comcast is having some networking problems. I can't seem to get a straight answer from the tech support people at Comcast.

As far as the Comcast software goes: do not install it. Many people have reported problems with the software and conflicts with IE (versions 5.5 and earlier). In addition, the software comes with some stuff you'd probably rather not have on your machine (some in the business have claimed the software is spyware). All you need to do is configure your TCP/IP settings and your email client settings manually... don't use the software

I've noticed a small decline in over-all performance, and a minor increase in ping times in the Omaha (Nebraska) area...

As for bandwidth that's the most noticeable part, the ping isn't something that most users, I think would, would notice... But I haven't heard very many people complain.

Connection is cool here in Monmouth County NJ. I usually get pretty close to caps.

I am in philly an this is my best.(after tweaks)

Your download speed : 329348 bps, or 329 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 40.2 k/sec transfer rate.

This morning....from NYC Speakeasy....

Your download speed : 1031705 bps, or 1031 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 125.9 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 118343 bps, or 118 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier! (Rocks?! I don't know about that, but from the looks of some posts it might!) That is with the firewall and viruscan still running.
