Got my license about 2 weeks ago. I drive a Chevy lumina 96'. I love it. Well couple ?'s cause im not a car guy. My dad says always put it in OD, well i do, most of time. I know it saves gas, but what does it do when i leave it on D, should i??
Is it safe if u floor it. I dot ia a lot. I love the sound of the engine lol. What will be faster acceleration D or OD.
New driver ?
D is going to be the faster of the 2 choices.
Your fuel consumption will suffer, you may over heat the transmission if you do that all the time. Not likely, but possible.
Basically, it's more wear and tear on the engine and transmission.
I know your a new driver and all, but please be considerate of others while your on the road. Flooring it can yield you a result that may induce harm to you or someone else. I'm not saying your stupid, we all did that I think, but be careful and mindful always!

Hi aagiants
We did this with MMC i believe a week or so ago, First you should read your Owners Manual as it contains lot's of good info that you should know, like Tire Pressures, how to Tow or Be Towed etc.
That said, Overdrive is used to improve Mileage and Reduce Wear on Drivetrain.
It is designed to be used on the Highways at higher speeds, like 50MPH and above.
Around Town you are better served Not using it, unless there are long streches of Road were your speed is uninterrupted.
Never Tow with it in OD , nor Haul Large Heavy loads while in OD,
Also in Hilly Terrain you should use regular gears, both for Acceleration as well as Compression Braking.
Overdrive lowers the Output of the Transmission to less than the Input, how much can vary.
So using overdrive is less than optimal for the drivetrain other than on the Highway for the most part.
