ntfs or fat 32

Post by Mark »

hey when i did a new install of XP on my new PC i must have missed the option for different file types so i have got NTFS in stead of FAT 32.

i just do gameing, burning, web stuff and general crap so should i go to FAT32 for a speed gain in games , or do i have an option ?

Well I would say ntfs, because of file permissions. Also fat32 screwed me over, I was using fat32 for 2kpro and dual booting win me. Suddenly NTLDR was missing so I couldn't boot anything, full format was needed. Just stick with NTFS.

Go with NTFS it's more stable, to convert start - run - type convert C: /FS:NTFS.

YeOldeStonecat has some excellent thoughts.

I used FAT32 which I recommend.

I like fat32 as well. Much easer to fix than NTFS and you can allways use dos to get into it and back your data up if needed.

I would use NTFS. Much more stable. The problem is, If you have any other harddrives in your computer that are formatted using FAT32, you wont be able to see them. But it will see a networked FAT32 drive.

Defraggin an NTFS partition takes like 3 minutes. It must defrag on the fly so to speak, cause a NTFS partition hardly ever needs defraggin.

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Since you are already NTFS, if you like it, and are comfortable using it, KEEP it. If you are having problems, switch and try FAT32.
