Article on dual CPUs...MP vs Xeon

Post by YeOldeStonecat »

A week or two ago, I was interested in tossing around the idea of a dual CPU rig of medium weights vs a single CPU rig of the latest. Seems I'll be keeping the role of "server" for the dually board that I have, as this writeup from GamePC certainly confirms that gaming and other "high memory bandwidth" apps suffer on dual rigs, as apparently their memory bandwidth is pretty, uh, crappy. Not because games don't utilize multi procs (as Quake 3 does), but, well, you could say that they dont, because on paper they do, but in real life, they crash when set on multi procs.

Anyways, come Monday, my new toys arrive. Until then, here's the article if anyone wants a quick read.

same ole stuff, intel on top of some categories and amd on top for the others. I thought that some of this was invalid just because they didn't pay attention to every detail in picking the same hardware for both test machines ex ram one had crucial and the other didn't. I stick by the philosophy to buy amd for graphics, gaming, multimedia, and intel for stability, reliablity, business apps, ect ect. I have a pent 4 at home and in alot of things phantom's amd out performs it. They don't have identical hardware infact phantom has a much better setup but still I can't deny the obvious amd superiority between these 2 machines.
Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
