Charter-STL feedback

Post by theINSPECTOR »

I have to admit.....I was skeptical about Charter. So far, so good. I'm d/l at 1.1m and u/l at 177k. (I guess all the new users aren't on yet ;) )
I called on Thurs and was impressed by the knowledge level of the tech, and he actually seemed to be concerned about getting me up and running.
I guess time will tell, but they're already better than @homo.

How about the rest of you St. Louis pipeline users?

I was just changed over this morning. My D/L speeds are down from 3000kbps to around 1000 kbps and my U/L are 177 ,up from 80 or 90 kbps.

But my pings are great !!! And thats what it's all about when online gamming :)

So far I'm not impressed with the performance. In general surfing it apears to be slower and I seem to get more stall outs. I've only run a few performance tests, but the results don't look good. My download speeds have been around 750Kbps-1Mbps which is about half as fast as I was typically getting with AT&T. On a brighter note, my upload speeds are now about 175k rather than 128K on @home. I haven't tried any ping tests yet so I hope your right about the improvement.

At least they seemed to do a good job of getting users reconfigured for Charter (except for those who use a cable/dsl router). I could not find out the primary DNS address without installing the software on one of my PCs and then changing the network settings back to work with my router. I realize their policy is not to provide tech support for home networks, but how much effort would it take to make the address available. I hate installing software I don't need.

I ran a couple more tests and found that if I choose the 200KB file test I get download speeds around 1.7Mbps. If I choose the 605KB test my speed is 1Mbps. It looks like they have a cap that kicks in on files over a certain size. (500KB?) Can anyone confirm this?

DO any of you guys using a router or switching gateway??? My Dad is running a ugate3200 and everything worked fine with @home. But once they switched to charter, I cannot get the router to connect to charter.

I need to know what to put in for the device name (or host) and the domain name.

Any help would be appreciated. I tried their techsupport and didn't get any answers.

Thanks,
Dale.

Boy, oh boy.....What a difference 3 days make.
Pitiful d/l speeds of 788.....u/l is 177 (big deal)
It seems we have a "politically correct" ISP, after all. All the bandwidth suckers and service abusers are whizzed for sure. Too bad all have to suffer.....

Cool Thanks. I will give that a shot. Quick question....

CHARTER PIPELINE-STL
Hostname: use your @home id
Domain: home.charter-stl.com
Server IP: 24.217.0.34
DNS Server: 24.217.0.3 / 24.217.0.4
Default Gateway: 24.207.224.1

For the hostname, you say to use your @home id. Are you referring to the account name for Charter? Or the old @home device name? Just wanting to make sure. I tried so many combinations without success, i feel like I am going insane.

Just to clarify... say my Dads account name and email is Roger@charter.net. So would you put in "Roger" for the host name?

As stated before, I am just wanting to clarify cause I got so fed up with it tonight and just want to get it right.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,
Dale.

Con't......

Post by theINSPECTOR »

Yep....use the "c28744288-a" or whatever you were issued for the original @home account as the hostname. Use 24.217.0.34 for the WAN DHCP server IP in the router. After you set it all up, reboot the router and cycle your cable modem, and you should be in business......And use the primary email address and the new password Charter emailed you (with the notification) to access the charter update site. Hope it helps.

dficken: On my Linksys router I only had to put in the DNS address, my user name and password. I left the host name and domain name blank.

I'm happy as hell that @Home is out of here.
My downloads are a little slower, but my uploads are doubled and my pings are under 100.
For the last 3 months with @Home, I haven't been able to get a ping under 600.

Thanks Charter
