Windows STARTUP, MY COMPUTER, ETC - Poor Performance

Post by clevelandtexas »

I just reformatted my hard drives this weekend and reinstalled Windows 98 SE from scratch. Essentially a good old fashioned spring cleaning. But somewhere along the line I pick up an annoying problem. Whenever I left/right click on START, or right click on MY COMPUTER, enter EXPLORE or select a file, etc, my performance is poor. On the other hand applications like MS WORD, EXCEL, etc, open quickly and run quite well.

Activity surrounding EXPLORER like popping up menus and working with folders is sluggish. All other aspects of my PC run quite well.

Any ideas? I did a similar reinstalled on my kids computer and did not inherit the same problem.

Try running SFC and see if it finds anything. Check for tasks running in the background(msconfig).

I've already run SFC and am using CACHEMAN instead of NETWORK SERVER. My problem seems to be centered around the MS program explorer.exe (EXPLORER).

I'm at work right now so I'll have to check when I get home tonight. I'm fully up to date with patches and fixes for WIN98 SE and MIE 5.5xxx

DOH, DOH, DOH, DOH, DOH!

I did a very stupid. After reinstalling Windows and most of my applications I FORGOT to clear out my c:\windows\temp directory. Yep, 49MB of absolute junk.
