Help me with my ping. (DONT EVER GET RR!!)
Ok I have talked to rr techies and they are as dumb as stumps after waiting a hour and a half for help. They basically tell me if I can surf with an average speed that my ping (They didn't know what ping was) was the games fault. Can someone help me speed this up? This makes me sick.. Never GET rr. Let me show you some pictures of my ping.

You can try the tweaks and patches here or you can take a trip over the: http://www.dslreports.com/tools(Tis what I use) and do some checks and read about there tweaks.

Dude, I'm right there with ya....My pings are TERRIBLE!!!!!! I mean, it's weird, because I'm in the server browser in Unreal Tournament I get some servers with descent pings, even some below 100, but as soon as I get into the game, the ping goes up to the thousands, as high as 8000!!! And it stays there. I've tried everything, tweaks, different NICs, talked to RR, different OS's. everything! It obviously has nothing to do with my computer at all. Its definitely RR. Even my ping to my gateway server is in the 400+ range. That ping shouldn't be higher than 50! I actually just finished writing them a nice, long, nasty 2 page email with an attachment of pings and traces I've been doing over the past couple of weeks. And I'm gonna be calling everyday and demanding credit on my account until its fixed and that they fix the problem immediately. I've got a lot of friends that have RR and most of them have no problems what-so-ever. One of my friends pings is gateway server at freakin 8-15ms. That pisses me off!!!! Anyhoo, I totally know what you're going through. I can't even play online games.

I completely agree.. I have insane pings in servers.. It is funny some pings go off the ping board in the game. I hope my city bans RR from hosting from this terrible service they are giving me. It is beacuse they offerd free cable modems and 40 bucks a month so now everyone in my city has em. And when 30,000+ people in my city are on at 7 at night well.. The broaband goes kaplooey. Roadrunner needs to do somthing about that or I'm going to sue em. Who needs a cable modem that you pay $40 bucks for that doesn't even work when you get back from school.
I've tried the clean install of EVERYTHING using different OS's. Its NOT my computer, and I keep having to try and convince the idiot RR technicians of that. The other thing that sucks is I have 3 other friends that have RR, all 4 of us are in different parts of the area and are on different nodes, they're pings are great! One of my friends just got RR installed yesterday and talked to the technician that was there for me. He said that one of the problems could be my actual modem. He said that they've encountered problems before with the model that I have, so today I'm calling RR and demanding they send out a technician to check my line, the node I'm on, and to give me the newer model modem. Hopefully that will fix it.

try doing a tracert to the IP address of the game server you are trying to play on.... that will eliminate the game from the equation.
Then you can look at each HOP to see what the ping time is to it. If the PING time is bad at a specific HOP you can tell RR the IP address and they should be able to tell you if it is local to them or outside.
Just in case you don't know how to do the tracert,, it is simple,,, simply type at a dos prompt.
C:>tracert the.servers.IP.address
for example for speedguide
C:>tracert 161.58.189.82
or you could type
C:>tracert forums.speedguide.net

Well, I finally got somewhere with those stupid people. They're coming out tomorrow to replace my modem (of which they said they've had problems before with the model I have) and they're also going to test the line....I also spoke to someone in they're "speed" department about the node and gateway server I'm on, they're gonna have someone check those out to. So, we'll see what happens!

If I were you I would still do the tracert so you can benchmark your ping times before and after the modem change and cable check.

You say, Hello?
w-Chris W says, What kind of slow speeds are you getting?
You say, 500-900 ping
w-Chris W says, You did that tracert I asked you to?
You say, Yeah
You say, I gave you the numbers but I don't have it up anymore, what was the tracert website name?
w-Chris W says, You gave me the first three lines, it looks like the speed issue is outside of our network.
You say, How do you know? I only gave you the numbers.
You say, And how is it outside of your network?
w-Chris W says, Only the first 3 lines are our network, probably only the first 2. They were well within acceptable limits.
w-Chris W says, Beyond that, it startkbones that are controlled by other companies.
You say, What are the exceptable limits?
You say, ...
You say, And these exceptable limits just suck.
w-Chris W says, There are no numbers that I could say for sure, however, anything around 400 or 500 ms and lower is acceptable as long as it is within the first 3 lines in a tracert.
You say, I see 19ms in the roadrunner part and 90+ in sprint.
w-Chris W says, Anything beyond that is beyond our control.
w-Chris W says, Thank you for using AT&T Broadband. Goodbye.
They are... I give up they can never help me.

You guys should really check out the Cable/DSL Forum here on speedguide.net We're having huge discussions on what's going on with the Cable services. Check it out guys, you might find it useful, and find that DSL is a better way to go for the people with @home getting screwed over.

I have RR in western Ohio and I usually have great pings. I usually connect to a server in Minnesota for playing of Half-Life TFC and usually get about 100ms.
I have only experienced problems for short amounts of time, but never what you guys are talking about for extended times. I hope you get it figured out!

The good and the bad
Road runner is a good service but I stand with you about the tech support. Where do they find those guys. I called the to ask about static and dynamic IP address and they did not know what I was talking about. After getting off of the phone with them I wanted to shoot myself. But anyway, I bought a router and that seemd to bring my ping down along with the patches I used.
Try this @home patch -->> http://www.speedguide.net/files/spatch.zip

I'm having the same problem with @Home. Upload and download speeds are fine, but gaming pings are ****... >600. I've tried everything too, and nothing helps.
I've been having the problem for 2 months. @Home says its because of a worm virus on their network that they can't control. They are working on it, but they don't know when the problem will be fixed.
