Netgear router

Post by Alteon »

My friend has a netgear rt314 at his office, it stopped working for some reason. The router responds to both the http and telnet. for some reason it can't obtain a WAN IP. I've tried forcing a renewel in telnet, but to no avail. Also, attempted powercycling, erasing and reinstalling firmware. Its connected to an alcatel 1000 DSL modem. The modem is syncing, and seems to be working just fine. I'm kind of lost on what it might be. I also tested the cat5 cable between them. any help would be appreciated. thanks!

His account may just be gone or not working or the external DSL line may simply be down. Eliminate the router as your problem by taking one computer and hooking up directly...meaning you'll probably have to install the PPPoE software that the ISP uses....see if the stand alone computer connects....if it doesn't, you know your router isn't the problem. If it does....then on to router troubleshooting.

Just because all the lights light up on the modem, doesn't mean the line is fully up.

are we talking about cable connection or dsl connection? If it is DSL I know this happens often it is not a problem with a router it is a problem with them not renewing ip give them a call and they should fix it, for me it could take up to 2 days withouth connection and then it comes back by itself.

I have had this problem with a router I installed at a clients site.
I have found that when renewing the wan ip the router sometimes "drops" the renew request.
To fix this my clients (very rarely) have to telnet to the router, go to menu 24.1, select 1 for drop WAN, request a web page through explorer and it forces the router to request a new wan ip.

If anyone cares to know. i ended up calling netgear tech. after bout half an hour of ****ing around we found out that (for reasons only known to forces we can never comprehend) the firmware had been corrupted or damaged. so when i upgraded it, that didnt help. i had to load the rom0 file and reload the firmware. thanks for the ideas though, alot of people take this site for granted, but it has saved more a** than any other site i know of, except for maybe the holy shrine of Technet :rotfl:
