Video Card Problem

Post by fartface »

My problem is that i have these gray streaks across my screen and i cannot get them to go away. they appear when i have darker colors on my screen (when my screen is all white, there are no streak lines) The streak lines are appearing on my screen horizontally. They're everywhere! i have adjusted the contrast and brightness and those do not work. and i know that it is something that is wrong in the computer, because i tried another monitor and it did the same thing. might be my video card. And this problem Came up during half-way of reinstalling WindowsME, and this problem just popped up. i reformatted my harddrive 3 times, and it doesnt go away. anyone got any suggestions? THANK YOU

Check your refresh rate. When I run mine too high my Monitor stays stable but I get exagerated grey lines on the screen.

Just a thought

the weird thing is that i only have 3 choices:

Adapter Default
Optimal
60hz

i used to have about 5 different refresh rates other than just 60hz
i remember have 65hz, 70hz, 75hz, 80hz but now they are not on there

I am not sure about the Visiontek program but I know with the Elsa video board I have it gave you the options to design and setup different monitor specs.

You may want to check the software that came with the board

make sure your computer is recognizing your monitor correctly

instead of "Default MOnitor"

maybe try PNP MOnitor or something else....

you have to make sure Windows knows what monitor you are using so it knows what refresh rates it supports so you can change it....

Hmm, I'm not sure about refresh rates, but I know that when you only have one or two resolution options, that usually means you are not using the right drivers for your video card.

Are you using the latest drivers for your video card?

go to nvidia.com and download the latest drivers for your board. I believe the most recent drivers are the 1241's. (thats the last 4 numbers of the driver number)

What operating are you running?

If its Windows Me like you were trying to install then you are going to go into control panel and go to system. Find you way to device manager. Look for "Display Adapters" and hit the plus sign next to it. Select your video card and then right click on it and select properties. Then click on the driver tab.

That should show you what driver it is using.

Hmm, I can't really tell what exact drivers you are using from that (others might be able to) but in order to remove the possibility of the problem being video card driver related, I would remove the driver for the card.

NOTE: before you remove the drivers, download the setup file for the newest det drivers you can find.

Windows will then use a generic driver that will only give you 640x480 and 256 colors or something like that. Then, once you are using the generic drivers and you've removed the ones that were listed in device manager, run the driver setup file.

Hope this helps.

**NOTE THE FOLLOWING IS ONLY IF YOU WISH TO BETA TEST VIDEO CARD DRIVERS**

If none of the above helps, you may want to try beta drivers not released by Nvidia but Nvidia released them to their beta testers and those are released to the public by different sites. The best site to get them at is 3dchipset. You said you had Windows ME, so these are the latest beta drivers for that OS.

http://www.3dchipset.com/beta/nvidia/14 ... 9x-me.html

Please post again if the 14.70 drivers dont fix your problem and post again if it does fix your problem. Thanks!

Didnt work

i did download the beta drivers and they still did not work. and another question: is the fan on the video card supposed to be running all the time? because i checked it and the fan was not running, not even when i was playing 3D games

I know you dont want to hear this, but my simple guess would be that your video card is faulty. A friend of mine had a tnt2 that was doing the same thing. The ONLY fix was he replaced his video card, problem was fixed after buying a geforce2.

I never thought I'd say this... but thank goodness it's a store bought. In that case, I would return the whole case. It will cost more in postage, but I think you'll save yourself in the long run. This will do two things. First of all, it will save from trying to prove that there is a problem. The other reason is, just in case it's not your videa. My educated guess is that 99% sure it is. However, you'd be safer to return the whole thing unless they tell you otherwise.

The problem is that Gateway has the worse service ever, you have to be careful, because they do not provide any support once you switched the OS from the one that was there before. If they will try to fix it, it would be with their recovery disk. They will defenatly not take the card by it self they will need the whole computer, for which you will be paying a good amount of shipping and waiting a good amount of time to get it back.

You can get a very nice geforce2 mx 64meg 400 for under 100, sometimes even with tv-out. That's the route I would suggest for the money. Unless you are aiming for a power system, you'd be wasting your money to buy any better. I think the radeon64 sdram is also selling sometimes for a $100, so that is something to consider as well.

I personally wouldnt suggest the gts for your system. A friend of mine just bought the first video card I suggested and he loves it. He ran serious sam at 1024 and was extremely impressed how well it handled.

Ahhh so are Geforce2 MX's pretty much the same thing as a Geforce2 GTS? If theyre not as fast would there be a drastic Performance decrease because i play lots of games and i need fast Video Cards. i also have Video Out for my card, but my TV doesn't have the right connectors dag nabbit

I'm not an expert on video cards beyond my limited knowledge of ati products. However, I am under the impression that the real difference between the geforce MX and the GTS is resolution preformace. If you dont plan on going above 1024, the geforce mx 400 will be fine. Becareful, there is a difference betwen the 200 and the 400.

The biggest thing is price. If you can find a gts for a small additional amount of money, then get it. I just dont think it's worth any big difference in price.

His four kids are all heavily into gaming and it'll handle every game they have perfectly. I'm sure it'll handle more as well. He had a tnt2 32meg before this in his pent3 733, and he amazed how much faster the geforce is. The games really do look much better he says.
