Speeding up Cable

Post by rbtweak »

:) Just wondering how I can improve on my settings? First off here's my specs...600 MHZ PIII, 192 SDRAM, Adelphia Powerlink (RCA Modem), I have Cablenuts ond Speedguide webtweak Properly installed, I've used Rwin values of 385440, 481800, 513920 and 55???? (can't remember).

TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 481800
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 60225
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 19272 kbps (2409 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 7708.8 kbps (963.6 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 18 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Just wanted to know if I changed any of the following values in my advanced tab on my NIC would this help me. The following are my choices.

Burst Length=1,2,4,8,16 or 32 DWORDS
EXT_MRL=Enabled or Disabled.
EXT_MRW=Enabled or Disabled
EXT_MWI=Enabled or Disabled
Interrupt Mitigation=Enabled or Disabled
Map Registers=4,8,16,32 or 64
No cable indication=Enabled or disabled
Receive Buffer=8,16,32,48 or 64
Snooze Mode=Enabled or Disabled
Store and Foward=Enabled or Disabled
Transmit Threshold 100Mb=128,256,512 or1024 bytes
Transmit Threshold 10Mb=72,96,128 or 160 bytes
Underrun Max Retries=2,4,6 or 8
Underrun Threshold=10,20,50 or 100

Any information would be appreciated.

BTW-I already have it set to autosense. Any new RWINs Please. :2cool:

RBtweak..
Maybe THIS will help mate :)

Cable modems/LAN intranets, specifically using a D-Link 530TX PCI Fast Ethernet adapter and a standard 1.5 Mbps Cox@home cable modem. Your card may or may not support these settings, but the chances are low:

1. Open Control Panel.
2. Open the Network applet.
3. Select Properties for your Ethernet adapter.
4. Select "Enhanced mode" in the Driver Type tab.
5. Click the Advanced tab.
6. Set Connection Type to "AutoSense", unless you're absolutely sure what yours is.
7. Set DMA Burst Length to "128 DWORDS". If it works, try 256 next, but do that only after you've tried 128 first.
8. Set Map Registers to 16 for starters, but you can increase it further if you want more speed.
9. Set No Cable Indication to "Enabled".
10. Set Receive Threshold to 512 bytes.
11. Set Transmit Buffers to 16.
12. Set Transmit Threshold to 1024 bytes.
13. Restart Windows.

Left out most important thing, OS so I will give you both, use which one applies 9x or 2x

For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut,click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: 64240, 513920, 522680, 524176

Bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside Cablenut on desktop the numbers below go in 3 places in W2k and XP, they are: DefaultReceiveWindow, TcpWindowSize, GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize, take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: Same # as above

At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT or it will not work. On help page below in signature, 2nd page, at bottom are Tips and How to do Speed test,
Good luck

Try RWIN's above

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as http://www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to http://www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average. Another fast download site is ftp.lucasarts.com
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time http://www.AOL.com seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to http://www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

Already Known

Post by rbtweak »

Hey Lobo already knew about the happypuppy, testmyspeed and AOL Things. Also use PC pitstop. Also use System Mechanic for erasing files. My main problem is that I increased my RAM from 128MB to 192MB and it seems my downloads slowed down. I was getting peak performance at Rwin 385440 with very low pings and 0% packet loss. My best downloads (not using DAP) at AOL.com were around 700-800KB. With DAP around 1MB+/-. Know I'm happy if I even see 140KB. Any insight on what I might be able to change. Any secret settings ;) you could email me.

Auto sense would be correct, how about cache size since you added RAM :)

I Virtual Mem set at 384 for Min and Max. File System set at Network Server. Under VCache I have 8192 for MinFileCache and 49152 for Max File Cache. Chunk Size is set to 512. I'm also using a conservative swap file. Anything I'm missing? :)
