WINXP RC1 is great so far

Post by Leatherneck »

I installed the release candidate last night and am surpised how well it went. I am running now and it seems fast. There are so many customizable features that it will take a while to figure it all out.

You have 14 days to activate it or it disables itself. The RC1 is then good for a limited time, I believe 6 months.

I will continue to dual boot along side 98SE to see if I might want to buy it.

Are you running RC1 or server? I haven't heard much about the server version and the Pro version doesnt do much for me If the server version is just cosmetic upgrades like XP then I think i'll wait for BlackComb

Release Candidate 1 is the Proffesional version. It has quite a bit of features. The networking tools worked flawless for my 2 PCs. There are a lot od Admin tools also.

I never used any of the previous builds so I don't know what may be different. Outlook express 6 is good and media player 8 works great.

Have you been able to install it from the CD on Booting up you pc. or just from Windows. The copy my friend tried only lets you upgrade or install as dual boot. Is there a way around this.

After I downloaded the ISO file, I then burned it using CD creator Platinum creating an install CD. When I booted, it automatically started the installation process.

Yes, you are presented with 2 options; upgrade or new install. You need to know what your intention is before hand. I simply formatted a partition and did a new install creating a dual boot situation. I'm not sure what you are getting at? You do not have to dual boot. I do not suggest trying to do a new install over an exisiting OS on the same partition or you will have problems.

Let me know if that helps.

I'm glad RC1 is working out or you my friend. I have only one issue. 6 months is way too short a time to use trial O/S software. In my opinion, A person needs atleist 3-4 years to fully test and get a "Feel" for a new software product. It is my deepest hope that you find a Crack on the NET to disable the time limit on the RC1. Good luck.

Bigmo66, what I mean is that if I were to format my Hard drive and do a clean install, I would not be able to. The OS install doesn't start up on boot. Also, if I start the pc with a boot disk and navigate to the CD, and try to run setup.exe I get a message saying that this application cannot be run in DOS.

If you have a bootable CDROM and you have it set that way in the BIOS, it should boot from the XP CDROM just fine. It was burned to a CDROM using the ISO format right?

Because You don't have to, because all you need is the universal corparate key, because they don't have to activite the program (it works for XP office so It should work for win xp).

Hi glears - if the above suggestions don't work - reboot from a win98 startup disk ( have a copy of smartdrv.exe on it too) - navigate to the i386 folder of your WinXP drive- run smartdrv.exe - then, without the quotes, type "winnt.exe" -
that will get the setup going in DOS.

Well nothing seems to work. I tried usingn smartdv.exe and running winnt from the XP disk and while xp was copying files over to the Hard Drive, it came up with errors that it could not copy a certain file. Also the setup was in a blue screen like I was installing Windows NT. I think I will stick with Windows ME.

Hi glears - at least it started copying. :-) There is probably somethng corrupted but it is not necessrily the end of the world. It could be that the files are not necessary. e.g *.wpa or *.png

I believe that when XP tries to copy files to the HD and finds a corrupt file, it gives you the option of "retry" or "skip" - if "retry" doesn't work, choose "skip". I think the next step is "esc" to continue. Just keep going till the end. When XP starts the install from your HD, it will flash a similar message saying it can't find the files you "skipped". Just choose "cancel" and install will continue. You will probably get an another error message at the end = again choose either"skip" or " close" - then setup should continue.
good luck.

help, guys, help guys!!

I've got the RC1 also.

I downloaded the .ISO file, and copied it to a CD using Nero, but I copied the exact .ISO file. will the .ISO file boot up in DOS?
I"m planning on reformatting my computer, and using XP as the primary OS. would I just pop the CD in as is, or do I need to do something else? thanks for your help.

I had been using a beta for a while, and the change to RC1 really impressed me. For one thing, drivers do not require a restart anymore. On first boot, it dod not detect by voodoo5, so it loaded with the VGASAVE genero-driver (which now supports 16BIT @ 1024x768!), so I installed the 3dfx one... the screen flickered, and it worked. no issue with my webcam driver (which took TWO reboots in the beta). LUNA (the UI) is slightly different, and ever so slightly more appealing. I like how you can choose what icons show on your desktop (neat freaks can now have absolutely nothing-- no My Computer, no Network Neighborhood-- nothing). That's all I 've discovered in my fist few minures... maybe more cool stuff will appear later :D ..

Here is something you can try - right click on the desktop
select NEW the SHORTCUT - when the Wizard pops up - type
in %SYSTEMROOT%\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Binaries\msconfig.exe
Then put the MSCONFIG on the Start Menu or leave it on the desktop.

Ok, I decided to format c: install ME and upgrade to XP. All went fine until I went to install my HP's burner and software. Also Adaptec 4.0. Compatibility issues stopped me in my trax. XP let me know in advance while installing the drivers and software that there was a compatibility issue and that http://www.roxio.com and Hp had updates for them. What a Lie. Has any one come accross the same problem.

It's a shame to see a nice looking GUI with anoying problems like that!

Oh Ya! what's the use of compatibility mode?

I have heard about problems with HP burners but that is about all. Have you check the private and public newsgroups for your
particular problem with RC1?
