Re: Removing ads from Download Accelerator
hey norm with v4.0.0.2 does your ad file and ad reg key get restored after it accsess the internet?Originally posted by Norm
Goto c:\Program Files\Dap and delete the directory "ads"
Then open regedit to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\SpeedBit\Download Accelerator\ads
delete that key.
Reboot, not sure it's necessary, but it won't hurt.
= No mo ads
And if the Download Accelerator Plus pic in the GUI bothers you too.......
goto c:\Program Files\Dap and delete the file named Dap.gif
This works for versions up to 4.0.0.2
I haven't installed the latest version yet.
I'll post back when I do.
in v5.0.0 it all gets restored after you let it out on the internet.
any thoughts would be nice. or a site that has the old ver. still avalible....if it stays deleted in that ver.

Stop the download of ads
The method that you people use is good, but if you replace the ad with a picture of your own, you still can click on the banner and it will lead you to DAP's webpage. The registry key is news to me, thanks for the info.
Here's how I stop the downloading of ads:
1. I go to the DAP folder, delete the "ads" folder
2. I make a new text document, name it "ads", then I delete the .txt extension.
3. I make the blank text file "ads" a read only file.
That's how I stop ads from downloading.
If you don't like how the banner links to the DAP page, you can remove the banner and have a blank grey space there.
Do a search for "anigif.ocx" and put it in a different folder or delete it and restart DAP, the banner will be gone and it will NOT link to a webpage.

well i actually fixed it for 5.0!
goto the folder C:\program files\DAP
u'll see 2 "ezupdate" files, one is a .exe and the other a .cfg
open the ezupdate.cfg file and scroll down, u'll see a heading "[ADS]" it'll have like 3 or 4 lines of crap that lets it update the registery settings norm posted to delete, simply remove all lines under "[ADS]" and then remove the ADS section in ur registery and the ads will not come back in version 5.0!

Eliminating the ocx file will stop the ads but does not stop the program from going out and grabbing more ads and placing them in the ads folder.
I deleted the folder and edited the reg key in DAP 4 and the folder and reg key return the first time you use DAP. I then edited the cfg file and again this did not prevent the folder and reg key from returning. I then deleted the ezupdate.exe and the .cfg and still the folder and reg key come back
Tried all of the above again with DAP 5 with the same results.
More than eliminating the Ads, I want the program to stop going out and retrieving the ads.
Any suggestions? What file keeps writing to the reg? This has become a quest with me and now I'll be up all night till I figure it out

You can put a custom pic in DAP and use my steps to stop ads from downloading.
I haven't tried it with DAP 5 yet
I'll do it tomorrow and see what I can do about it.
shouldn't be too hard since they aren't about to change a huge chunk of code (I hope)

BINGO!
hehe, my method does stop the ads from downloading on the new DAP 5.0 as well. Guess they didn't rewrite the code yet (or maybe they have yet to find this method of ad blocking)
I also deleted the 4 lines out of ezupdate.cfg under [Ads].
You'll have to do this offline and before you use DAP on the net though, cuz if you went online, it'll download an ad and the program will not show DAP.gif
ever after you deleted the ads folder!
I did a little searching and found that after you downloaded an ad, the path to the ad is inputted into the registry.
you can edit it if you want to direct the banner back to your custom pic.
it is at LOCAL_MACHINE-->SOFTWARE-->SPEEDBIT-->
DOWNLOAD ACCELERATOR-->ADS-->SECOND MEDIA-->[INPUT A 4 DIGIT NUMBER]-->Filename
As usual, you should exercise precaution when editing the registry, and always backup!

Ha, there's nothing like knowledge.
I just hope the people of DAP don't read this thread
I like helping people, it's just the right thing to do.
(sometimes it's not but that's besides the point)
This is quite a friendly forum, people are knowledgable too.

and it still leaves it as a text file.Originally posted by Norm
Rename the file and don't put the extention in. Right click a file /select rename to rename it.
Thanks a lot for the info phenix0000
I may be able to do everything i want with the info you have provided
It may be a while before I get into it, I'll post somewhere on SG when I do.

Go to View-->Option in Windows Explorer
There should be something like:
'Don't show extension for known file types'
uncheck that and remove the extension on the text file
Explorer will say it may make it unstable, ignore it and click yes.

in dap, the other way to remove ads is to go to the registry "HKEY_CURRENT_USER---->Software---->Speedbit---->Download Accelerator---->Ads, then right click on DefaultServer and then modify. to have a blank ad (no picture with no link), empty the value data box; to have a webpage pop up, type a webpage in the value data box. when you did any of the two choices, click ok. exit regedit and reboot the computer. the problem should then be fixed. it worked for me.
