Let me say this, it's basically worthless IMHO. You need to have their software loaded on your puter and then you can use the netdiag program. I'm on @home, enjoy great speeds, and run trouble free because I didn't load one thing from them. I use IE6 to browse and thats it. I don't use their proxy server settings as they suggest. Slows you down. Unless you are experiencing some kind of problem, I'd leave it alone. Even if you are having problems, there are already diagnostic utlities within Windows that you can use to troubleshoot most anything. Plus, you have the best resource right here, the peeps at SG. Halflifer is really good at diagnosing problems, as are most members right here. PM him if you have a question. :)

Yeah, definitely come here first...phone support leaves a lot to be desired...however, if you can get a field tech out, they usually can get you fixed up (but that's just my biased opinion ;) )

@home diagnosis?

Post by gbiddle »

Trust these guys. I don't think you want the @home diagnosis.
Thanks to this forum I was able to avoid loading the @home software that I did not want.
I had noted various post here at SpeedGuide about it not being necessary to use the @home software to use the service.
I was with ISP Channel and they went belly up and @home took over all the accounts on MediaCom Harvest, AL.
ISP Channel went out about November 2000 and it took them till May 2001 to begin the change over.
One morning my service was working and "poof" it was not working. I waited about 12 hours and called tech support to find out why my service was not working. They proudly announced that the @home conversion had finally taken place and in about 24 hours service would be back to normal. (When they told me this I asked if there was ANYTHING I would need to do to make the service work. I was told no. It would just start working again as normal.) I waited 48 hours and no service. Called tech support again. They did not have a clue. Waited 24 more hours and called tech support. They asked me if I had changed my "Computer Name" and "Workgroup". I told them I had not, because no one had told me I needed to. The tech support person looked up my information and we proceeded to change all this and it still would not work. Tech person told me someone else would call me back and help me resove the problem. Twenty four more hours and no call. I called tech support again. This time the support person and I discussed the problem and at this time I informed them I had a router with my computer connected to it and another computer upstairs connected and asked them if this "Computer Name" and "WorkGroup" needed to be loaded into the router also. I was told they did not support any devices like that and I would need to purchase an additional IP Address for only $6.95 a month, do away with the router then my service would work. After some questioning the tech support person admitted that he "thought" there was a work around but he did not know how to do it. Now let me be the first one to admit my understanding of networking is novice but I am trying to learn all I can about this. So I sat back a few minutes and thought "There is NO way their network can see my computer unless that "Computer Name" and "Workgroup" is posted out on the router." I went into the router setup and entered this information and BINGO it all worked.
About a week later my monster information packet arrived from @home via Priority Mail with the computer name and workgroup information and an "Installation CD" inside. If I had waited for this packet I would have been without service for over two weeks. For safety sake I called tech support and told them I had this packet but I really did not want to load this on my computer. The support person sheepishly admitted that it was not really necessary to load all this software IF you understood enough about networking and the Internet to get your connection working.
As far as @home goes... I give the connection speed a thumbs up (It seems to have improved on download and up load speed a lot over ISP Channel.) but the tech support is out in left field.

Does it just check if you have access to things? Like
<a href="support">support</a>
<a href="mail">mail</a>
<a href="news">news</a>
and other crap

Mr. Dave.... Huh?

That is another thing I forgot to mention. The mail server AND the news server in the information packet were wrong for my area. I had to call tech support for those too.

The guy says "@home is your mail server"
I told him I entered that but it would not work. He leaves the phone comes back in a minute and tells me oops there is a different mail and news server for the MediaCom customers they have aquired. He gave me the names, I plugged them in and it worked. I wonder how many tech support calls they got on that one?

Seems like mistakes like that one would swamp a tech support group trying to get a new bunch of accounts up and running.

if you punch in support only it should work. it does on @home where I live. This works cause the cable modem has cable settings for mail, news, support and probably a thousand other things..

You don't want to bother installing any of the @hosed software on your system. It just causes config problems with other programs on your sys and really is rather useless anyway. If you can surf then your connection is fine, if not call your MSO and get a truck roll :)
