needs some help with dsl

Post by thekid »

hello ... im just wanting to ask if someone can help me optimize my dsl connection ??? ... my os is win98se , using pacbell dsl ... and im just getting around 40kilobytes per sec on downloads ... i installed the speedpatch but no significant improvements happened ...
here's what i got from tweak tester :

TCP options string = 020405780103030201010402

MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1400
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1400, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 255552
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
515200 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
257600 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
128800 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
64400 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10222.08 kbps (1277.76 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4088.832 kbps (511.104 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 49 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

-----------------------
if someone can help me reach better speeds pls do so ... thanks :rolleyes:

If the MTU is the same as you installed it from the patch from speedguide then try lowering the MTU a touch..
The MTU in the patch sets it at 1492 this may be to big for the router.
Try numbers between 1472 and 1486.
Also did you have this machine connectiong with PPPoE software at one time or still look in this thread for the answer. http://forums.speedguide.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=14&t=000138
What your looking for is a setting called MaxFrameSize if this is in there and set to low this would also give you the same results..

hello ! ...
first of all thanks for ur help ... but before and after i installed speed patch,the tcp analyzer gave me :

MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

and yes i had pppoe at one time ... and where can i find maxframesize setting ??? ...
coz i cant find mazframe size on either of the two folders in HOTKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Net\000x

thanks ///

another thing is we have enternet 300 installed here
and i tried changing the values of mtu on regedit but the tcp test still gave me
MTU = 1440
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.
