xDSL via fiber..how to network?????????

I have BellSouth xDSL that utilizes fiber to the curb and then Cat.5 straight to the PC (no modem internal or external). Is there a way to network 3 - 4 PC's with 1 dynamic IP without using Internet connection sharing? I've called Linsys Tech Supp. and they stated that I must have an external xDSL modem to use their router. Thank You!!!!

Thats weird, no modem? Never heard of that one before, if you wanna share your internet connection without a router, then you will either have to use Internet Connect Sharing, or one of the Proxy proggies out there.

After reading some on the different types of xDSL, mine seems to fall into the VDSL group...but I could be wrong. I would like to use a router if at all possible and stay away from ICS.

Yeah that is odd. I imagine that a router would work, they don't need a cable modem or xDSL modem to work ( like linksys said). If anything find a inexpensive switch.

Hey slurpie,
My brother has that same connection with Bellsouth. It should be using PPPoE. He has a router at his place and it works fine. Actually pretty quick. they limit your bandwith outside your house, but you will have half the latency of most other regular dsl that have to hop along copper to the CO.

woops, sorry i forgot to mention he's using a netgear rt314. so i dont know about the linky. plus some techsupport guys are morons, so i wouldnt trust what they told you.

Aaahhh, News that I like to hear...The linky is free so of course I'm going to try it first but I found a D-Link DI-704 for $80.00 so that will be my next choice. As far as the connection goes, it rocks! During peak times I average about 1.7mbs/230Kbps with a latency of 4ms avg to the first hop under W98 and 0ms with W2k. So...no complaints here.

one thing slurpie. if you want to try this and arent scared of a fine or jail. some where on you property or close by. there is a "canary" this little box basically converts fiber optic to cat5 to continue the transmission. since my brother works for a large county IT department we got a hold of a 10baseT canary. he went form 1.8/245 to 3.8/404. thats the consistent speeds, but ive seen it peak way past there. but only try this if you know what your doing and dont care about the penalties. actually nevermind dont try this. bad advice. real bad advice. bad bad.

I know what your refering to, we call it an "ONU" (use to work for a division of BellSouth). If you have the hook up for this magical card, then I'll attempt anything..um..I mean that some crazy person in my neighborhood will try anything.

Your service is what BellSouth calls IFITL (integrated fiber in the loop), or some people know it as FTTH (fiber to the curb) and it comes to your curb as fiber then connects to a converter and from there Cat5 to your house.

Yes, the Linksys router will work with this service. Make sure you set the Linksys up to handle the PPPoE connection. BTW- Every other router should work fine as well.

Thanks for the replies, after about 10 min of setting everything up (rebooting, getting yelled at by the wife, another reboot) it worked. Its funny, when I called Linky tech no-support, they guy thought I was on crack when I told him that I didnt use a modem..then went on to say that the router needed an external modem to work....Advice for others...Look here first before then use their tech support -my opinion of course

He probably had never heard of the service. It's fairly new and BellSouth is one of the only providers that's rolling it out liberally.
