I need a HDD for my backups/storage

Post by Easto »

I need to buy 2 spinners. Both will be for long-term storage and accessed about once or twice a year (1 will be for off-site). I have a separate HDD docked to my rig for more immediate backups.

Without going into all the details... What are my best options for a 4tb or 6tb HDD?

Internal or external? I usually buy internal WD Reds, and I have a USB3 docking station by my PC.

They're all external. One will kept here at home, another will be at a friends. I will update and copy any new info to them via a new docking station I plan on purchasing. Once those 2 are in order I may only update them once a year. I will have a 3rd external HDD that will stay connected to the docking station (and computer). When a critical file or program warrants an immediate backup it will be done to that drive. Then, I'll be copying that 3rd drive with any new files to the 1st and 2nd drives.

Sorry when I said internal I meant ones that are sold without enclosures, ones that you use with a docking station included.

WD Reds have worked well for me.

There are two types of hdds according to how they write on the platters, CMR and SMR. I would avoid the Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) type, CMR are more reliable.
