Weird mouse/Windows scrolling issue (Fixed)

Post by Easto »

Two days ago I updated the drivers for my audio interface. I started to notice that upon booting up the speaker icon had an "X" next to it indicating it was muted. If I clicked on it the slider would open up but whenever I tried to increase the volume it would snap back to "0/Muted". The only way I could get it to work properly was to go into the Windows sound settings and increase the volume there. This was just a temporary fix because every time I would hover my mouse over the speaker icon in the tray it would automatically mute itself again. Then, all of a sudden whenever I was using Google Calendar, using "Month" view, the months would start scrolling in one direction and I couldn't return to the current day/month without clicking on the "Today" button.

This got me thinking it wasn't the new soundcard drivers but something else. After spending more time that I would have liked to I came across an article describing this issue and the solution was to unplug the mouse, turn your computer off and then back on, re-attach the mouse and Bingo! It worked. Something so easy for such a difficult problem to track down.

I guess it's not fixed. This morning it started doing the same thing again. It's going to be kind of a drag if I have to unplug my mouse every 3 days !

I just did a quick check and it appears my left and right mouse buttons had been reversed in the settings. I have no idea how that happened. My left primary button was acting as the right button.

Well, this problem seems to have come back to life. This time the left/right buttons were set correctly when checked. This is really weird. I'll report back with more info later.

Is there another slider you can use for the speakers from the Windows menus? Remove uninstall/reinstall audio drivers?

I think it has something to do with the mouse and those drivers. For instance, when experiencing this problem it manifests itself as... I open a drop down list but when I move the mouse or try and click on one of the items the list closes. I've removed the mouse drivers and let them reinstall themselves. It works but temporarily.. This last time it reversed the left/right button functions again.

I've got more research to do.

Have you tried a different mouse, or if the problem persists when the mouse is disconnected? One of the mouse buttons may be stuck at times?

It appears it was the actual mouse. I'm now using the mouse from my wife's computer and there hasn't been a problem for a couple of hours. I guess I'll be heading over to Newegg for a new mouse later today.
